Millions face Easter travel chaos amid threat of national rail strike

Signallers and maintenance workers affiliated with RMT union being balloted over Network Rail job cuts Millions of rail passengers face disruption to their Easter travel plans amid the threat of the first national rail strike since 1994. Signallers and maintenance workers affiliated with the RMT union are being balloted over job cuts and changes to working practices, with the results due over the next week. Network Rail – which owns the country's tracks, signals and stations – said a walkout by signallers, in particular, could bring trains to a halt across the network. Robin Gisby, the Network Rail director of operations, said he expected 5,500 signallers and thousands of maintenance staff to strike over Easter. "Our guess is that it will come together this Easter weekend," he said, but indicated that Network Rail would not back down over the changes to shift patterns and voluntary job cuts that underpin the dispute. "I cannot live with the RMT holding the whole country to ransom," he said. Network Rail employs 18,000 maintenance workers but is cutting 1,500 posts. The vast majority of the cuts are being achieved by voluntary redundancies as new equipment and techniques transform the duties of maintenance staff. Network Rail believes it can withstand a strike by maintenance workers for one week, but anything longer could see speed restrictions imposed in order to protect tracks, with some branch lines shut down entirely. However, Gisby admitted that a strike by signallers would cause significant problems because the major signalling centres controlling trains in major areas such as London would be left unstaffed. The result of the maintenance worker' ballot is due to be announced on Thursday, followed by that of the signallers due at the end of next week. Network Rail has weathered local strikes in the past, but the rail industry has not endured a national strike for 16 years. The RMT pounced on a safety warning by the rail regulator last week, saying it was proof that Network Rail's reforms were threatening safety. The Office of Rail Regulation – which has mandated the cost savings underpinning the maintenance cuts – warned that senior managers could be overworked under the untested proposals. The RMT general secretary, Bob Crow, claimed the changes could result in repeats of the Potters Bar crash, which killed seven people in May 2002, and the Hatfield accident, in which four passengers died in in 2000. Both were caused by track and points problems. "No matter how they try to spin it, the maintenance cuts and the changes to safety practices involving signallers will leave the senior management at Network Rail with blood on their hands in the event of another Hatfield or Potters Bar," Crow said. "That is the issue at the heart of these disputes." Network Rail is adamant that the changes will not endanger passenger or worker safety, and points to an accident record that has improved significantly since the government-backed company took over Britain's rail network from Railtrack in October 2002. Galloway demands Labour sacks agent after islamophobic and racist comments

George Galloway has written to Labour's General Secretary Ray Collins, MP Jim Fitzpatrick and Labour candidate Rushanara Ali, demanding Tower Hamlets Labour Party election agent and council candidate Graham Taylor should be sacked and disciplinary action taken against him and other members. This follows Islamophobic and racist comments appearing on Taylor's Facebook.

Taylor attended a meeting on election arrangements at Tower Hamlets Town Hall with the chief executive Kevan Collins, chief legal officer Isabella Freeman and chief elections officer Louise Stamp, on Monday evening.

Before going to the meeting he put out the following message on his Facebook group - "Graham Taylor is off to that centre of Islamic fundamentalism - Tower Hamlets Town Hall". A number of his Facebook friends then responded, including former councillor and Labour's council candidate for Stepney ward Judith Gardner. Gardner wrote "Give em hell!". Another friend wrote the disgusting racist comment: "Bring some pork scratchings" and another "Pork!".

"This is a disgraceful example of the Islamophobia and racism now infecting parts of Tower Hamlets Labour Party," said an outraged George Galloway. "The comments were made just before the Dispatches programme on Monday, which a number of Labour members co-operated with and in some cases inspired. These comments should have no place anywhere, never mind in a party claiming its commitment to opposing racism and respect for people of faith.

"I am demanding that Taylor is sacked as Rushanara Ali's election agent and his nomination for council candidate withdrawn. He is clearly not a fit and proper person to hold office in the Labour Party. And former councillor Judith Gardner should also be stood down. I don't know if the other contributors are Labour Party members but, if they are, they also should be subject to action by the Labour Party, up to and including their expulsion."
