A message from George Galloway
"The great Egyptian people have spoken. Egypt is back and the winds of change are blowing through the Middle East and beyond, threatening to knock down the imperial architecture that has robbed the people of the region for so long.

"And chief among the outstanding injustices from the colonial epoch is Palestine. Now the struggle for a free and dignified Palestine takes place in the epic battle for a new Middle East and wider Muslim world that meets the hopes of its people.

"Viva Palestina Arabia gathered together academics, politicians and activists last year in the Bekaa Valley in our first Summer University of Palestine to discuss and coordinate the struggle for Palestinian rights.

"Now, after the heroic Egyptian revolution has overthrown the pharaoh Mubarak, this year's Summer University has been reorganised to address the questions thrown up by the extraordinary events in Tunisia and Egypt, which are now rolling through the region.

"Book your time off work or college now - 23 to 30 July, just before Ramadan. The university will be in Beirut, upgraded and bigger than last year. It will again have world renowned speakers such as Norman Finkelstein and Ghada Karmi, who spoke last year. Booking details and the first tranche of speakers will be announced next week. This advance notice is to ensure that if you are making plans for summer now, you know to be in Beirut from the 23 July."

On September 27, the Federal Court of Canada issued a 60-page ruling that exposed the political interference of "the highest levels of government" in trying to keep former British MP George Galloway out of Canada. The ruling found that "the main reason why [the government] sought to prevent Mr. Galloway from entering Canada was that they disagreed with his political views.

This is a MAJOR VICTORY for Galloway and the social movements in Canada.
The ruling also clears the way for Galloway to return to Canada.

Please join us for a city-wide public meeting on Sunday, October 3 to hear George Galloway - in person - speak about his fight to overturn the ban, and about our common struggle to end war and occupation in Palestine, Afghanistan and around the world.

A defiant George Galloway says he may take another run at legal action against Immigration Minister Jason Kenney for branding him a terrorist and trying to muzzle his anti-war views.

The outspoken former British MP, who landed in Toronto Saturday, came out swinging against his political nemesis. He said he wants “redress” from Mr. Kenney, accusing the cabinet minister of putting his life at risk.

“I'm not being melodramatic,” Mr. Galloway said.

“There are crazy people in the world who — if I really was, really were the person Jason Kenney painted me as — might have thought themselves fully justified in putting a bullet in me.”

Mr. Galloway said he'll go into more details about the “searing” and “surreal” turn his life took after Mr. Kenney deemed him a security risk when he speaks Sunday in Toronto.

The speech will also focus on how the Canadian government is using anti-terrorism as an excuse to suppress legitimate political debate, he said.

By trying to keep him out of Canada, Mr. Kenney has only managed to attract more attention to his anti-war views, Mr. Galloway said.

“He's damaged Canada's reputation,” he said.

“I don't know if it's because he's a fool or a knave. I'm not sure which would be worse, but I am sure that Canada deserves better than that.”

Mr. Galloway, who cleared customs more than an hour after his plane landed, was greeted by dozens of chanting, sign-waving supporters at the airport.

He said he was quizzed at length by three immigration officials, but found them to be professional and polite.

Mr. Galloway was scheduled to speak in Canada in March, 2009, about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but aborted the tour after Ottawa said he would likely be denied entry.

The government cited his dealing with Gaza's elected Hamas government, which Canada considers a terrorist organization.

Earlier this week, a Federal Court judge found the Conservative government had acted politically to suppress his opinions.

Mr. Galloway said Kenney's terrorist allegation cost him his long-held seat in the U.K. House of Commons in May, hampered his ability to travel and created anxiety and stress for him and his family.

He abandoned a libel suit against Mr. Kenney on the grounds that it was proving too expensive to fight, but said Saturday he will consult his Canadian lawyers and examine his legal options.

“I'm very happy to be in Canada, and my presence proves that Canada remains a country governed by laws, not by ‘here today, gone tomorrow' politicians and their whims,” he said.

Brandishing signs calling Mr. Kenney the “Minister for Censorship and Deportation,” Mr. Galloway's supporters said they're outraged by the government's attempts to suppress free speech.

"All he is doing is delivering aid — ambulances, incubators, hospital supplies, wheelchairs, that kind of thing — to the people of Gaza who have been under siege and are living in deplorable conditions,” said 29-year-old student Fava Zaharuk, who volunteers with the Toronto Coalition to Stop the War.

“And it's for this that we're banning him from speaking in Canada? I don't want that kind of government.”

WORLDPRESSNETWORK 28 Sep 2010
Federal Court Judge Richard Mosley issued a 60-page ruling on Monday that slams the Canadian federal government for attempting to ban former British MP George Galloway from entering the country. The ruling vindicates Galloway and his Canadian supporters who argued that Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Jason Kenney made a political decision to try to keep Galloway out of Canada, not one based on national security claims.

According to Justice Mosley, “the main reason why the respondents [the Federal government] sought to prevent Mr. Galloway from entering Canada was that they disagreed with his political views.”

The ruling also refutes government claims that Galloway’s humanitarian aid convoy to Gaza made him a national security risk: “From the evidence on the record, the question of Galloway’s admissibility was never an issue of national security… CSIS was consulted prior to the writing of the CBSA assessment and had no national security concerns about his visit.”

The ruling exposes how staff in Jason Kenney’s office attempted to ban Galloway from Canada, although no final decision had been made: “It is also clear that the preliminary assessment was prepared with the intention that it be used to justify a CBSA officer’s determination that Mr. Galloway was inadmissible should he appear at the border.”

Galloway’s Canadian supporters are claiming victory.

“This ruling confirms what we have been saying from the beginning: Jason Kenney attempted to ban Galloway because he disagreed with his views,” says James Clark, a member of the Toronto Coalition to Stop the War and an applicant in the case. “This kind of behaviour is completely unacceptable in a democratic society, and represents a serious attack on Canadians’ free speech rights. We are pleased that the Court agrees with us.”

THEGLOBEANDMAIL 28 Sep 2010
Judge Mosley closely examined the conduct of political staffers in Mr. Kenney's office, particularly his director of communications, Alykhan Velshi, and the response by bureaucrats.

The judge said he agreed with Mr. Galloway's Canadian supporters that “that the main reason why the respondents sought to prevent Mr. Galloway from entering Canada was that they disagreed with his political views.”

The judge concluded the government fell short of the standard required to label someone a terrorist.

“It is clear that the efforts to keep Mr. Galloway out of the country had more to do with antipathy to his political views than with any real concern that he had engaged in terrorism or was a member of a terrorist organization,” the judge stated.

Opponents of Mr. Galloway's visit said they felt vindicated by the dismissal.

“We are pleased with the decision to dismiss the application for judicial review,” Mr. Velshi said Monday in a e-mailed statement.

James Clarke, of the Toronto Coalition to Stop the War, said Judge Mosley's deeper dissection of government conduct vindicates Mr. Galloway's supporters.

“There was political interference at the highest levels of government, which represents an attack on the free speech rights of Canadians,” said Mr. Clarke, who along with his group, were among the unsuccessful applicants in the case.

The Harper government has faced repeated accusations that it has unfairly tilted Canada's Middle East policy towards Israel while turning a blind eye to the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza.

Mr. Galloway had planned a speaking tour to discuss topics such as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In his ruling, Judge Mosley outlined a chain of events that started on March 16, 2009 with Mr. Velshi doing some online research of open sources about Mr. Galloway's activities. Mr. Velshi “expressed the view that Mr. Galloway was inadmissable” in e-mails that circulated through the Immigration Department in the next few hours.

“Apart from the open sources cited by Mr. Velshi in his e-mails, it does not appear from the record what, if any, additional research was conducted. When consulted, CSIS advised CBSA that they had no concerns with Mr. Galloway's visit from a security perspective,” Judge Mosley said in the ruling.

Government officials reached a decision that was not reasonable and erred in its application of the law, but the judge noted the “novel” circumstances they faced with their political masters.

“Moreover, they were being asked to provide a rapid assessment in circumstances where Ministers' offices were actively engaged and where political staff and senior officials had already staked out a position . . . the assessment was written after political staff and senior officials had prematurely reached the conclusion that Galloway was inadmissable.”

The judge said it was not surprising that bureaucrats reached the same conclusion “albeit in more cautious language.”

Mr. Galloway's supporters are already making plans to try to bring him to Canada in the coming weeks, Mr. Clarke said.

MAVI MARMARA SURVIVORS SET TO LEAD RETURN TO GAZA

Two survivors from the massacre on the Mavi Marmara are set to lead the viva Palestina convoy to break the siege of Gaza. Nicci Enchmarch and Kevin Ovenden were both aboard the Mavi Marmara when it was attacked by Israeli commandos in the early hours of 31st May. Friends and colleagues from Turkey died around them and they were then imprisoned in the Negev desert.

They will be leading the Viva Palestina Lifeline 5 convoy of urgent medical aid to Gaza which is due to depart from Central London tomorrow (Saturday) at 9.30am.

The convoy has representatives from organisations in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Malaysia as well as volunteers from the United States, Britain and Northern Ireland. En route it will be joined by representatives of organisations in France, Italy, Greece and Turkey.

Two other convoys are being organised from Casablanca and Doha,, involving representatives of organisations in Morocco and Algeria and the Gulf States and Jordan respectively.

The three convoys with between 150 and 200 vehicles will then meet in Latakia in Syria before being shipped past the point at which the Mavi Marmara was attacked down to the Egyptian port of El Arish before crossing into Gaza via the Rafah Crossing.

This is the biggest and most international convoy set to break the siege of Gaza so far. The British convoy will form up at the Embankment east of Westminster Bridge from 8.30am tomorrow (Saturday) morning to leave at 9.30am. George Galloway and the human rights lawyer Jim Nichol will be joining the convoy at the Embankment and there will be a press conference there.

“We knew the Israelis were going to attack, or intercept us in some way. At 11pm we had the first contact. A visual warning was that two Israeli warships were approaching us, followed by a third.

“We were 90 miles north of the Israeli coast, and 22 miles away from the buffer zone that Israel has set from its shores.

"We had tight organisation procedures in place and people were prepared.

"The captain and the most experienced activists on board said that people should rest. Many people did while others stayed on the look out.

"At 4.25am the attack began. The warship had neared and commandoes were lowering themselves onto the deck from helicopters. There were two motorised dinghies, carrying 14-20 commandoes, on either side of the boat.

"It was clear they were armed – it was the equivalent to an SAS raid. They were all wearing paramilitary style balaclavas.

"The first soldiers landed on the roof of the ship, people responded instinctively with their bare hands and things you would find on a ship – pieces of wood and piping and so on. No sharp objects were used.

Two soldiers were overpowered and pushed below deck. They were disarmed to prevent further injury or death.

"The attack opened with percussion grenades.

"These don’t just make a noise but send shockwaves of heavy vibration. They were trying to create terror and panic.

"They also used rubber coated bullets in the earlier stage. But very quickly they turned to live rounds and we were taking heavy casualties.

"Niki Enchmarch was on the top deck standing next to a Turkish man who was holding a camera. An Israeli soldier shot him in the middle of the forehead. It blew off the back of his skull and he died.

"I was on the second deck. A man standing a metre in front of me was shot in the leg, the man to the right of me in the abdomen. There was pandemonium and terror.

"The youngest person on the ship was not yet a year old, the eldest 88. The crew included German and Egyptian parliamentarians, NGO workers and representatives from various charities. This is who Israel was targeting.

"While they opened fire we struggled in our defence and to limit the massacre.

"They attacked with lethal force to terrorise the movement for the end of the siege of Gaza and the wider movement of solidarity with Palestine. They used violence to instill terror for political ends. This is the definition of terrorism.

"But they failed. The people aboard, their families and the people who donated to the €20 million aid, are not afraid – neither are those in the wider movement.

"This must become a turning point in the lifting of the siege and an end to the policies pursued by governments in relation to Israel.

"Israel has completely isolated itself. Around the world we must redouble our efforts and commit to action to end the siege. This is a political opportunity in which big advances can be made.

"The statements of condemnation by David Cameron and William Hague betray how isolated Israel is. These are leaders of a pro-Israeli party, and yet these statements have been more damning than anything Gordon Brown said when Israel was bombing Gaza in December 2008 and January 2009.

"Governments claim to recognize the siege is unsustainable. We have to force the UN, the EU and all the other governments to turn their words of condemnation into action."

ACTIVIST Kevin Ovenden has been deported to Istanbul after he was caught up in the Israeli attack on the convoy carrying aid to Gaza.

Mr Ovenden who worked in the Westminster and Bethnal Green offices of former Respect MP George Galloway was on the Mavi Marmara ship which was attacked by Israeli forces leaving nine people dead.

He arrived in Istanbul together with hundreds of activists this morning.

Mr Ovenden has been on two other aid convoys to Gaza and is the organiser of the UK-based Viva Palestina campaign.

In a statement today the Newham resident said: "The massacre on the Mavi Marmara must be a turning point. Passengers from 32 countries were murderously attacked by the Israeli forces. This is the Sharpeville and the Soweto of the movement for Palestinian solidarity. People of those countries around the world must now tell their governments that we are not prepared to continue to allow Israel to flout international law. The inhuman siege of Gaza must end now! The Israeli government has used terror for political ends, but we are not afraid. We who survived the Mavi Marmara massacre will redouble our efforts to bring humanitarian assistance to the people of Palestine and end this siege."

His friend and colleague Respect's Rob Hoveman has known Mr Ovenden for 25 years and spoke of his relief that he is safe.

He said: "Kevin is uninjured and I am very relieved. Everybody is delighted that he is out and safe.

The Respect Party is calling on the British government to act urgently to secure the release of 28 British nationals who are confirmed missing after the Israeli assault on the Gaza aid flotilla. These were members and supporters of Viva Palestina, the Free Gaza movement and the Palestine Solidarity Campaign. So far, the Foreign Office has failed to reply to urgent requests for information regarding the fate of these heroic volunteers.

All were aboard ships taking 10,000 tonnes of construction materials and human assistance to Gaza in defiance of the illegal and inhumane Israeli blockade. The flotilla was attacked in international waters and so far 19 aid volunteers are known to have died. This was an act of piracy and murder.

All five ships were boarded, commandeered and towed to Ashdod port in Israel . The aid was confiscated and all the aid volunteers were arrested. The Israeli government has failed to release any information on their whereabouts or health so they are missing at this time. The full list of those who we know are missing is below.

Among them is Kevin Ovenden, the international coordinator and leading force in the creation and development of Viva Palestina. He has led three aid convoys to break the siege of Gaza since March 2009 and is the epitome of tireless heroism and sacrifice in support of Palestine .

Kevin is a hugely influential and cherished comrade in the Respect Party. He is a member of the Executive Committee, the National Council and a leading figure in Tower Hamlets Respect. He led the Viva Palestina group that joined the Gaza aid flotilla this week and carries the pride and passion of our entire party and movement with dignity and intelligence in this daring mission.

We demand the immediate release of Kevin Ovenden. The Respect Party has firm information that Kevin was unharmed in the assault on the flotilla and we expect his unharmed release from detention forthwith.

We demand the release of all those detained in this murderous attack. These people are heroes who have risked everything to help Palestine . They will be honoured upon return. In particular, we draw attention to Ahsan Shamruk, who travelled with Viva Palestina and was injured in the attack. He is reported to be in a stable condition and we send our thoughts and wishes for his safe return home.

The full list of British nationals (provisional) is as follows:

Kevin Ovenden, a former aide to George Galloway, has been missing since being arrested as part of convoy taking aid to Gaza.

And those concerned about his welfare will link up with a massive demonstration protesting the attack, which happened on Sunday in the Mediterranean Sea.

Mr Ovenden, a member of Respect, worked in the party's Bethnal Green office for five years.

Friends believe he has been arrested by Israeli authorities who attacked the aid convoy, and is being held awaiting deportation.

The Trafalgar Square march starts at 1.30pm on Saturday.

RAGE AGAINST ISRAEL NATIONAL DEMONSTRATION, LONDON, 5 JUNE 2010

The astounding turnout at Monday's emergency protest, when at
only a few hours notice, thousands laid siege to David Cameron's
residence in Downing Street and then marched to the Israeli
Embassy (see
http://bit.ly/aEMHws), was a reflection of the
intense rage at Israel's deadly attack on the Gaza flotilla, felt
by millions worldwide.

Ours was just one of hundreds of protests that took place in
towns and cities across the globe.

A national demonstration in London this Saturday 5 June has been
called by Stop the War, CND, BMI, PCS and Viva Palestina. The Gaza
Flotilla March will assemble at Downing Street at 1.30 and march
to the Israeli Embassy (note below changed details for the
Islamophobia conference).

Monday's emergency demonstration showed how fast we can mobilise
if we use all available means to spread the word as fast as
possible. Please do all you can to publicise the demonstration
among your friends, in your workplace, in your trade union, in
your college or school, in your community group etc.

LATEST UPDATE AS AT 5.30AM

The attack by the Israeli Navy on the unarmed, non-violent civilian crew and
passengers of the humanitarian aid Free Gaza Flotilla is fully underway.

Israeli Commandos are boarding all the ships and shooting at passengers. Reports
say at least 2 people are dead and a further 50 or 60 injured. IHH on Livestream is
showing Turkish News, which is patched through to the IHH ship, so we have live
pictures of what is going on. The livestream is being shared by Press TV, Al
Jazeera, IHH and everyone so occasionally we see and hear glimpses of english
reporting inbetween turkish reports, which is all very helpful to us. Hassan Ghani has
reported heavy use of various kinds of ammunition and a full naval assault.
I have spoken at length to the Foreign Office response team on behalf the British
citizens on the ship, to activate the need for consular assistance since it is obvious
none of the citizens themselves are in a position to make that kind of formal request.
FCO has a duty politician for each regional team, eg. Middle East, so there is
someone beyond the civil service that formally knows what is now going on now.
The Foreign Office team are now watching the IHH footage, because I made them
hook up to it whilst I was on the phone. BBC News foreign team confirms they are
also aware of the situation. SKY was harder work, but I made them hook up to IHH
again whilst I was on the phone so they couldn't pretend they didn't know that British
citizens were under direct attack at that very moment from the Israeli Navy shooting
live rounds. Many passengers' family, friends and supporters have headed off to
Downing Street, to start demonstrating right now.... The main demo will be from
2pm. Please note the Foreign Office is handily located immediately next to Downing
Street. Please keep in touch and keep watching IHH

VIVAPALESTINAARABIA 30 May 2010
George Galloway founder of the worldwide Viva Palestina movement and  leader of three land convoys which broke the siege on Gaza today  hailed the heroic sea-borne aid effort steaming towards Gaza.

Speaking from Miami Florida where he is in the middle of a twelve city speaking tour of the US on Palestine Galloway hailed the Turkish humanitarian organisation IHH which has organised and leads the flotilla as "heroes" who are facing the hardships of the seas and the  threats of violence from Gaza's beseigers the Apartheid state of Israel.

Galloway called on all people and governments of goodwill to insist on safe passage for the hundreds of humanitarians on board the ships and  the unmolested delivery of the vital aid supplies on board.

Promising on behalf of Viva Palestina Arabia a second sea convoy later in the year - again in partnership with IHH - Galloway thanked the government of Turkey and it's incomparable prime minister Erdogan for showing the world the way to peacefully confront the international  crime being committed against the people of Palestine.

We have all just heard live from Hassan Ghani of Press TV, Sarah Colborne of PSC and all the other national spokespeople on the IHH Boat that the Flotilla has got radar contact showing 3 Israeli warships approaching, with one visible to IHH boat eyes. There are drones flying overhead. The flotilla is between 90 and 120 miles out at sea. That is far outside the 68 mile exclusion zone Israel has today (illegally) declared. The ships are clearly in international waters. The flotilla passengers all have life belts on, clearly anxious, but organised and determined.

I have already spoken to the Foreign Office Emergency Response team, who are not in the position of doing anything pro-actively (they never are, it's just not their job). They are acutely aware of the flotilla's situation and ready to assist as
appropriate any UK citizens abroad, or their direct relatives, "who need or request consular assistance".

The people we really have to hammer away at are our elected representatives. We HAVE to email/phone/text our Government Ministers - AND YOUR INDIVIDUAL CONSTITUENCY MP - to get them to support the convoy and tell the Israeli Navy to bugger off:

The UK's Liberal Democrats have abandoned their agenda in a bid to join in a coalition with the Conservatives, says a former British Member of Parliament.

The Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron and his Liberal Democrat Deputy Nick Clegg both echo the same sentiments about a "united" and "strong" coalition government.

Yet, the former Respect MP from Britain told Press TV that what they remain to be united about are unfortunately the war in Afghanistan and the savage reduction in the public services and a system that makes working people pay for an economic crisis they have not created.

"In fact the Liberal Democrats have abandoned the policies which made them different. The policies of, for example, not wishing to replace the Trident nuclear weapons system, at least no replica of that system," George Galloway said.

"They have abandoned their commitment to the European Union in favor of David Cameron's Conservatives' hatred of virtually all things European."

The former MP argued that the Liberal Democrats have abandoned anything which made them different.

"So there is no reason why they should not be united, united in making working people pay in continuing to occupy other people's countries around the world, he said.

Galloway went on to criticize the hereditary nature of government in Britain, saying it is not as eulogizing as some describe it.

He said that a system "where the head of state is hereditary, where the House of Lords is packed with unelected people" cannot be described as a democratic system.

Galloway said that the Government in the United Kingdom "is not as good as, for example, the United States of America, which has a written Constitution and which has proper checks and balances within its system."

"If you get 36 percent of the votes, you should get exactly 36 percent of the seats in the parliament, and if you get 5 percent, as we might do, then you get 5 percent of the seats."

MORNINGSTARONLINE Thu, 13 May 2010
Respect is here to stay, a defiant George Galloway has declared at a packed press conference in east London.

Following the party's disappointing showing in the recent local and general elections, Mr Galloway hit back at the "gross distortions and lies" that the party was finished.

Mr Galloway rebutted the BBC suggestion that the party had no money following the departure of its biggest donor, stating: "These are false claims. Azmal Hussein is Tower Hamlets Respect chairman not national chairman," he said.

"And if you check, you will see he is not a major financial backer of the party.

"The party will continue to be funded in the same way as before - by small donations from supporters and members. They are not rich in money but rich in commitment and spirit."

Mr Galloway promised to instigate legal action if the BBC did not issue a retraction.

In the run-up to a bitterly fought election, where Mr Galloway finished third in Poplar and Limehouse behind eventual Labour victor Jim Fitzpatrick, suggestions were raised that Respect was merely a "Muslim party."

But Respect Bethnal Green and Bow candidate Abjol Miah dismissed the suggestion and said that voters were different depending on what part of the country you go to.

"Yes, in Tower Hamlets we have predominantly Bangladeshi and Muslim members but that reflects the local circumstances. Respect members in Manchester and further north are for example mainly white."

Mr Miah defended the record of councillors in the area, crediting them with pushing up social housing provision to 35 per cent.

"However this is still lower than former mayor Ken Livingstone's target of 50 per cent in the capital and that is due to new Labour," he said.

Mr Galloway praised local Respect councillors for opposing the opening of strip clubs in the area and insisted that Respect would be part of any campaign to defend public services from the coalition government's cuts.

"Working people have already paid enough for the crisis," and those responsible should pay, he said.

Asked whether Respect would align with Labour in opposition to defend the public from any cuts, Mr Galloway added: "Whoever comes to its side, we will be there."

Yesfor Mayor sent a message to the members of Yes For Mayor - Tower Hamlets :
Subject: Yes we can.... 60,758 voted YES and 39,857 voted NO

Well done to everyone who worked hard and made it happen.....

The work has just begun! Will update you in the next few days

This is great news for George Galloway and The Respect Party (
http://www.therespectparty.net) which campaigned hard for this against all mainstream parties. WPN hopes George Galloway stands for election as Mayor. Tower Hamlets needs someone who isn't beholden to national politics to push forward the agenda which is best for Tower Hamlets.
