A message from George Galloway
"The great
Egyptian people have spoken. Egypt is back and the winds of change are
blowing through the Middle East and beyond, threatening to knock down
the imperial architecture that has robbed the people of the region for
so long.
"And chief among the outstanding injustices from the
colonial epoch is Palestine. Now the struggle for a free and dignified
Palestine takes place in the epic battle for a new Middle East and wider
Muslim world that meets the hopes of its people.
"Viva Palestina Arabia gathered together academics,
politicians and activists last year in the Bekaa Valley in our first
Summer University of Palestine to discuss and coordinate the struggle
for Palestinian rights.
"Now, after the heroic Egyptian revolution has
overthrown the pharaoh Mubarak, this year's Summer University has been
reorganised to address the questions thrown up by the extraordinary
events in Tunisia and Egypt, which are now rolling through the region.
"Book your time off work or college now - 23 to 30
July, just before Ramadan . The university will be in Beirut, upgraded
and bigger than last year. It will again have world renowned speakers such
as Norman Finkelstein and Ghada Karmi, who spoke last year. Booking
details and the first tranche of speakers will be announced next week.
This advance notice is to ensure that if you are making plans for summer
now, you know to be in Beirut from the 23 July."

After five weeks on the road through France, Italy, Greece, Turkey and Syria, the Viva Palestina 5 aid convoy entered Gaza yesterday (21 October). Made up of almost 150 vehicles, 370 people from 30 different countries and $5 million of aid, the convoy entered the besieged Gaza Strip amid scenes of jubilation. The activists are expected to spend three days in Gaza to hand over the aid, conduct a number of visits and hold meetings with government officials.
Kevin Ovenden, the Viva Palestina 5 director, said, "We are absolutely overjoyed to be here and to bring with us the soil from the graves of those who were massacred on the Mavi Marmara which will be used to plant trees as a memorial to their sacrifice."
Despite the palpable joy there were notable absentees from the party, particularly Viva Palestina's founder, George Galloway. He, along with 17 other members, were denied entry into Egypt by the authorities.

A defiant George Galloway says he may take another run at legal action against Immigration Minister Jason Kenney for branding him a terrorist and trying to muzzle his anti-war views.
The outspoken former British MP, who landed in Toronto Saturday, came out swinging against his political nemesis. He said he wants “redress” from Mr. Kenney, accusing the cabinet minister of putting his life at risk.
“I'm not being melodramatic,” Mr. Galloway said.
“There are crazy people in the world who — if I really was, really were the person Jason Kenney painted me as — might have thought themselves fully justified in putting a bullet in me.”
Mr. Galloway said he'll go into more details about the “searing” and “surreal” turn his life took after Mr. Kenney deemed him a security risk when he speaks Sunday in Toronto.
The speech will also focus on how the Canadian government is using anti-terrorism as an excuse to suppress legitimate political debate, he said.
By trying to keep him out of Canada, Mr. Kenney has only managed to attract more attention to his anti-war views, Mr. Galloway said.
“He's damaged Canada's reputation,” he said.
“I don't know if it's because he's a fool or a knave. I'm not sure which would be worse, but I am sure that Canada deserves better than that.”
Mr. Galloway, who cleared customs more than an hour after his plane landed, was greeted by dozens of chanting, sign-waving supporters at the airport.
He said he was quizzed at length by three immigration officials, but found them to be professional and polite.
Mr. Galloway was scheduled to speak in Canada in March, 2009, about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but aborted the tour after Ottawa said he would likely be denied entry.
The government cited his dealing with Gaza's elected Hamas government, which Canada considers a terrorist organization.
Earlier this week, a Federal Court judge found the Conservative government had acted politically to suppress his opinions.
Mr. Galloway said Kenney's terrorist allegation cost him his long-held seat in the U.K. House of Commons in May, hampered his ability to travel and created anxiety and stress for him and his family.
He abandoned a libel suit against Mr. Kenney on the grounds that it was proving too expensive to fight, but said Saturday he will consult his Canadian lawyers and examine his legal options.
“I'm very happy to be in Canada, and my presence proves that Canada remains a country governed by laws, not by ‘here today, gone tomorrow' politicians and their whims,” he said.
Brandishing signs calling Mr. Kenney the “Minister for Censorship and Deportation,” Mr. Galloway's supporters said they're outraged by the government's attempts to suppress free speech.
"All he is doing is delivering aid — ambulances, incubators, hospital supplies, wheelchairs, that kind of thing — to the people of Gaza who have been under siege and are living in deplorable conditions,” said 29-year-old student Fava Zaharuk, who volunteers with the Toronto Coalition to Stop the War.
“And it's for this that we're banning him from speaking in Canada? I don't want that kind of government.”
THEGLOBEANDMAIL 28 Sep 2010
Judge Mosley closely examined the conduct of political staffers in Mr. Kenney's office, particularly his director of communications, Alykhan Velshi, and the response by bureaucrats.
The judge said he agreed with Mr. Galloway's Canadian supporters that “that the main reason why the respondents sought to prevent Mr. Galloway from entering Canada was that they disagreed with his political views.”
The judge concluded the government fell short of the standard required to label someone a terrorist.
“It is clear that the efforts to keep Mr. Galloway out of the country had more to do with antipathy to his political views than with any real concern that he had engaged in terrorism or was a member of a terrorist organization,” the judge stated.
Opponents of Mr. Galloway's visit said they felt vindicated by the dismissal.
“We are pleased with the decision to dismiss the application for judicial review,” Mr. Velshi said Monday in a e-mailed statement.
James Clarke, of the Toronto Coalition to Stop the War, said Judge Mosley's deeper dissection of government conduct vindicates Mr. Galloway's supporters.
“There was political interference at the highest levels of government, which represents an attack on the free speech rights of Canadians,” said Mr. Clarke, who along with his group, were among the unsuccessful applicants in the case.
The Harper government has faced repeated accusations that it has unfairly tilted Canada's Middle East policy towards Israel while turning a blind eye to the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza.
Mr. Galloway had planned a speaking tour to discuss topics such as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
In his ruling, Judge Mosley outlined a chain of events that started on March 16, 2009 with Mr. Velshi doing some online research of open sources about Mr. Galloway's activities. Mr. Velshi “expressed the view that Mr. Galloway was inadmissable” in e-mails that circulated through the Immigration Department in the next few hours.
“Apart from the open sources cited by Mr. Velshi in his e-mails, it does not appear from the record what, if any, additional research was conducted. When consulted, CSIS advised CBSA that they had no concerns with Mr. Galloway's visit from a security perspective,” Judge Mosley said in the ruling.
Government officials reached a decision that was not reasonable and erred in its application of the law, but the judge noted the “novel” circumstances they faced with their political masters.
“Moreover, they were being asked to provide a rapid assessment in circumstances where Ministers' offices were actively engaged and where political staff and senior officials had already staked out a position . . . the assessment was written after political staff and senior officials had prematurely reached the conclusion that Galloway was inadmissable.”
The judge said it was not surprising that bureaucrats reached the same conclusion “albeit in more cautious language.”
Mr. Galloway's supporters are already making plans to try to bring him to Canada in the coming weeks, Mr. Clarke said.

PressTV : Hundreds of volunteers have set off from London in vehicles packed with medical aid in an attempt to break the Israeli siege of Gaza. The Viva Palestina convoy will link up with more activists in Europe and the Middle East over the next few weeks. International agencies say the economic blockade on Gaza has caused a humanitarian crisis in the terrortory. Roshan Muhammed Salih reports from London.
From http://www.vivapalestina.org/home.htm - Press release for immediate use - 17th September
MAVI MARMARA SURVIVORS SET TO LEAD RETURN TO GAZA
Two survivors from the massacre on the Mavi Marmara are set to lead the viva Palestina convoy to break the siege of Gaza. Nicci Enchmarch and Kevin Ovenden were both aboard the Mavi Marmara when it was attacked by Israeli commandos in the early hours of 31st May. Friends and colleagues from Turkey died around them and they were then imprisoned in the Negev desert.
They will be leading the Viva Palestina Lifeline 5 convoy of urgent medical aid to Gaza which is due to depart from Central London tomorrow (Saturday) at 9.30am.
The convoy has representatives from organisations in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Malaysia as well as volunteers from the United States, Britain and Northern Ireland. En route it will be joined by representatives of organisations in France, Italy, Greece and Turkey.
Two other convoys are being organised from Casablanca and Doha,, involving representatives of organisations in Morocco and Algeria and the Gulf States and Jordan respectively.
The three convoys with between 150 and 200 vehicles will then meet in Latakia in Syria before being shipped past the point at which the Mavi Marmara was attacked down to the Egyptian port of El Arish before crossing into Gaza via the Rafah Crossing.
This is the biggest and most international convoy set to break the siege of Gaza so far. The British convoy will form up at the Embankment east of Westminster Bridge from 8.30am tomorrow (Saturday) morning to leave at 9.30am. George Galloway and the human rights lawyer Jim Nichol will be joining the convoy at the Embankment and there will be a press conference there.

“We knew the Israelis were going to attack, or intercept us in some way. At 11pm we had the first contact. A visual warning was that two Israeli warships were approaching us, followed by a third.
“We were 90 miles north of the Israeli coast, and 22 miles away from the buffer zone that Israel has set from its shores.
"We had tight organisation procedures in place and people were prepared.
"The captain and the most experienced activists on board said that people should rest. Many people did while others stayed on the look out.
"At 4.25am the attack began. The warship had neared and commandoes were lowering themselves onto the deck from helicopters. There were two motorised dinghies, carrying 14-20 commandoes, on either side of the boat.
"It was clear they were armed – it was the equivalent to an SAS raid. They were all wearing paramilitary style balaclavas.
"The first soldiers landed on the roof of the ship, people responded instinctively with their bare hands and things you would find on a ship – pieces of wood and piping and so on. No sharp objects were used.
Two soldiers were overpowered and pushed below deck. They were disarmed to prevent further injury or death.
"The attack opened with percussion grenades.
"These don’t just make a noise but send shockwaves of heavy vibration. They were trying to create terror and panic.
"They also used rubber coated bullets in the earlier stage. But very quickly they turned to live rounds and we were taking heavy casualties.
"Niki Enchmarch was on the top deck standing next to a Turkish man who was holding a camera. An Israeli soldier shot him in the middle of the forehead. It blew off the back of his skull and he died.
"I was on the second deck. A man standing a metre in front of me was shot in the leg, the man to the right of me in the abdomen. There was pandemonium and terror.
"The youngest person on the ship was not yet a year old, the eldest 88. The crew included German and Egyptian parliamentarians, NGO workers and representatives from various charities. This is who Israel was targeting.
"While they opened fire we struggled in our defence and to limit the massacre.
"They attacked with lethal force to terrorise the movement for the end of the siege of Gaza and the wider movement of solidarity with Palestine. They used violence to instill terror for political ends. This is the definition of terrorism.
"But they failed. The people aboard, their families and the people who donated to the €20 million aid, are not afraid – neither are those in the wider movement.
"This must become a turning point in the lifting of the siege and an end to the policies pursued by governments in relation to Israel.
"Israel has completely isolated itself. Around the world we must redouble our efforts and commit to action to end the siege. This is a political opportunity in which big advances can be made.
"The statements of condemnation by David Cameron and William Hague betray how isolated Israel is. These are leaders of a pro-Israeli party, and yet these statements have been more damning than anything Gordon Brown said when Israel was bombing Gaza in December 2008 and January 2009.
"Governments claim to recognize the siege is unsustainable. We have to force the UN, the EU and all the other governments to turn their words of condemnation into action."

Demonstrators concerned about the welfare of an East London activist caught up in the Israeli attack on an aid convoy will gather at Trafalgar Square at the weekend. Kevin Ovenden, a former aide to George Galloway, has been missing since being arrested as part of convoy taking aid to Gaza. And those concerned about his welfare will link up with a massive demonstration protesting the attack, which happened on Sunday in the Mediterranean Sea. Mr Ovenden, a member of Respect, worked in the party's Bethnal Green office for five years. Friends believe he has been arrested by Israeli authorities who attacked the aid convoy, and is being held awaiting deportation. The Trafalgar Square march starts at 1.30pm on Saturday.

LATEST UPDATE AS AT 5.30AM The attack by the Israeli Navy on the unarmed, non-violent civilian crew and passengers of the humanitarian aid Free Gaza Flotilla is fully underway. Israeli Commandos are boarding all the ships and shooting at passengers. Reports say at least 2 people are dead and a further 50 or 60 injured. IHH on Livestream is showing Turkish News, which is patched through to the IHH ship, so we have live pictures of what is going on. The livestream is being shared by Press TV, Al Jazeera, IHH and everyone so occasionally we see and hear glimpses of english reporting inbetween turkish reports, which is all very helpful to us. Hassan Ghani has reported heavy use of various kinds of ammunition and a full naval assault. I have spoken at length to the Foreign Office response team on behalf the British citizens on the ship, to activate the need for consular assistance since it is obvious none of the citizens themselves are in a position to make that kind of formal request. FCO has a duty politician for each regional team, eg. Middle East, so there is someone beyond the civil service that formally knows what is now going on now. The Foreign Office team are now watching the IHH footage, because I made them hook up to it whilst I was on the phone. BBC News foreign team confirms they are also aware of the situation. SKY was harder work, but I made them hook up to IHH again whilst I was on the phone so they couldn't pretend they didn't know that British citizens were under direct attack at that very moment from the Israeli Navy shooting live rounds. Many passengers' family, friends and supporters have headed off to Downing Street, to start demonstrating right now.... The main demo will be from 2pm. Please note the Foreign Office is handily located immediately next to Downing Street. Please keep in touch and keep watching IHH http://www.livestream.com/insaniyardim Best wishes Ellie 07770 376701

George Galloway founder of the worldwide
Viva Palestina movement and leader of three land convoys which broke the siege on Gaza today hailed the heroic sea-borne aid effort steaming towards Gaza.
Speaking from Miami Florida where he is in the middle of a twelve city speaking tour of the US on Palestine Galloway hailed the Turkish humanitarian organisation IHH which has organised and leads the flotilla as "heroes" who are facing the hardships of the seas and the threats of violence from Gaza's beseigers the Apartheid state of Israel.
Galloway called on all people and governments of goodwill to insist on safe passage for the hundreds of humanitarians on board the ships and the unmolested delivery of the vital aid supplies on board.
Promising on behalf of
Viva Palestina Arabia a second sea convoy later in the year - again in partnership with IHH - Galloway thanked the government of Turkey and it's incomparable prime minister Erdogan for showing the world the way to peacefully confront the international crime being committed against the people of Palestine.

We have all just heard live from Hassan Ghani of Press TV, Sarah Colborne of PSC and all the other national spokespeople on the IHH Boat that the Flotilla has got radar contact showing 3 Israeli warships approaching, with one visible to IHH boat eyes. There are drones flying overhead. The flotilla is between 90 and 120 miles out at sea. That is far outside the 68 mile exclusion zone Israel has today (illegally) declared. The ships are clearly in international waters. The flotilla passengers all have life belts on, clearly anxious, but organised and determined. Watch the IHH deck live (Blood Pressure Warning: the stream keeps freezing, buffering and pausing for obvious reasons): http://www.livestream.com/insaniyardim I have already spoken to the Foreign Office Emergency Response team, who are not in the position of doing anything pro-actively (they never are, it's just not their job). They said it was impossible but we did it, against overwhelming odds.
We organised and successfully delivered more than $5 million worth of humanitarian aid to the beleaguered people of Gaza. Three huge convoys, hundreds of vehicles, scores of volunteers, medical equipment, drugs, through dozens of countries, past cheering crowds but also in the teeth of opposition from the governments of some countries. But it doesn't end there. It cannot. While the illegal siege continues it's our duty to do what we can to pierce the blockade and help relieve the suffering Palestinians. Which is why we're launching Viva Palestina Arabia now.
You are closest to it, you feel it in your hearts, which is why I am asking you to help me, Viva Palestina Arabia and the starving, battered, but indomitable people of Gaza.
Please.
George Galloway
PRESSTV Sat, 15 May 2010 16:32:19 GMT
The UK's Liberal Democrats have abandoned their agenda in a bid to join in a coalition with the Conservatives, says a former British Member of Parliament.
The Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron and his Liberal Democrat Deputy Nick Clegg both echo the same sentiments about a "united" and "strong" coalition government.
Yet, the former Respect MP from Britain told Press TV that what they remain to be united about are unfortunately the war in Afghanistan and the savage reduction in the public services and a system that makes working people pay for an economic crisis they have not created.
"In fact the Liberal Democrats have abandoned the policies which made them different. The policies of, for example, not wishing to replace the Trident nuclear weapons system, at least no replica of that system," George Galloway said.
"They have abandoned their commitment to the European Union in favor of David Cameron's Conservatives' hatred of virtually all things European."
The former MP argued that the Liberal Democrats have abandoned anything which made them different.
"So there is no reason why they should not be united, united in making working people pay in continuing to occupy other people's countries around the world, he said.
Galloway went on to criticize the hereditary nature of government in Britain, saying it is not as eulogizing as some describe it.
He said that a system "where the head of state is hereditary, where the House of Lords is packed with unelected people" cannot be described as a democratic system.
Galloway said that the Government in the United Kingdom "is not as good as, for example, the United States of America, which has a written Constitution and which has proper checks and balances within its system."
"If you get 36 percent of the votes, you should get exactly 36 percent of the seats in the parliament, and if you get 5 percent, as we might do, then you get 5 percent of the seats."
MORNINGSTARONLINE Thu, 13 May 2010
Respect is here to stay, a defiant George Galloway has declared at a packed press conference in east London.
Following the party's disappointing showing in the recent local and general elections, Mr Galloway hit back at the "gross distortions and lies" that the party was finished.
Mr Galloway rebutted the BBC suggestion that the party had no money following the departure of its biggest donor, stating: "These are false claims. Azmal Hussein is Tower Hamlets Respect chairman not national chairman," he said.
"And if you check, you will see he is not a major financial backer of the party.
"The party will continue to be funded in the same way as before - by small donations from supporters and members. They are not rich in money but rich in commitment and spirit."
Mr Galloway promised to instigate legal action if the BBC did not issue a retraction.
In the run-up to a bitterly fought election, where Mr Galloway finished third in Poplar and Limehouse behind eventual Labour victor Jim Fitzpatrick, suggestions were raised that Respect was merely a "Muslim party."
But Respect Bethnal Green and Bow candidate Abjol Miah dismissed the suggestion and said that voters were different depending on what part of the country you go to.
"Yes, in Tower Hamlets we have predominantly Bangladeshi and Muslim members but that reflects the local circumstances. Respect members in Manchester and further north are for example mainly white."
Mr Miah defended the record of councillors in the area, crediting them with pushing up social housing provision to 35 per cent.
"However this is still lower than former mayor Ken Livingstone's target of 50 per cent in the capital and that is due to new Labour," he said.
Mr Galloway praised local Respect councillors for opposing the opening of strip clubs in the area and insisted that Respect would be part of any campaign to defend public services from the coalition government's cuts.
"Working people have already paid enough for the crisis," and those responsible should pay, he said.
Asked whether Respect would align with Labour in opposition to defend the public from any cuts, Mr Galloway added: "Whoever comes to its side, we will be there."
ROSSLANDTELEGRAPH 30 Apr 2010
Three stories featured (briefly) in the news this week point out how fragile a thing our democracy is and serve to underscore how important it is for us all to be vigilant and vocal when its threatened...even if by our own government.
First, the subject of British MP George Galloway came up again. Last year , Galloway, a member of the British government and a vocal supporter of the Palestinian people, was refused admission to Canada for a speaking tour because he was deemed to be a 'member of a terrorist organization'. His crime? He'd participated in a convoy delivering humanitarian aid to people in Gaza and turned aid money over to officials in the democratically-elected Hamas government in the afflicted area.
This week a Federal hearing heard allegations that the barring of Galloway was politically-motivated and that orders regarding the controversial MP came from as high up as the Immigration Minister or even the PMO.
At the same time, the Afghan detainee abuse issue came to a head with a ruling by House Speaker Peter Milliken that affirmed that ultimate political power rests in the hands of the parliament as a whole and not in the hands of the Conservative minority government which has attempted to block the release of sensitive documents pertaining to allegations that Canadian forces turned Afghan detainees over to torture.
Both these actions come from a government that has more than once confused 'Canada' with 'the party that happens to be in charge of the government for a while'.
And the third story? Remember the hoopla a couple of years ago when the Conservatives created new stationary and letterheads reading 'Canada's Conservative government'? Today, Ethics Commissioner Mary Dawson stated that the Harper government's use of 'prop cheques' featuring party colours and the Conservative logo when announcing funding crossed a line and tends to undermine the confidence of the people in government.
Shameful, partisan stuff. Stephen Harper and his people think that they are the government of Canada when in fact they are merely the party with the most seats in parliament at this particular moment. There's a real danger in all three of these cases that the Conservatives' primary interest isn't in serving the country, but in serving their own interests.
Why ban a British MP? Possibly because he's anathema to certain lobby groups that the Harper government wants to please. Why withhold documents? Possibly because the Afghan detainees were handed over on Harper's watch and there's a danger a scandal around this issue could cost the PM his job if it came to a head during an election. Why brand government of Canada cheques with a party logo? Well, the answer is probably pretty obvious by now.
Put bluntly, there's a real danger that this government is more concerned with staying in power than with free speech and human rights. There's a real danger that it's willing to trample on whatever it needs to in order to maintain its sweaty grip on power. In their striving to be the leaders of the country, there's a real danger they've become enemies of what this country is supposed to stand for.
Scary stuff.

This makes our campaigning over the next four days in advance of the postal vote coming out even more important. There are large numbers of voters we can still convince to vote for us. And here is a chance to vote for Respect even before the postal vote comes out (and we seem to be winning!) •Tory controversy http://www.eastlondonadvertiser.co.uk/c ... fault.aspx and
http://www.eastlondonadvertiser.co.uk/c ... :22:49:003 •Respect has forged further ahead in the Advertiser poll with over 40% now. If you haven't registered your vote, it's time!
•Fear of electoral fraud in tower hamlets
http://www.eastlondonadvertiser.co.uk/c ... :49:07:157 •The front page of the Advertiser does just what we wanted it to do and gives a banner headline warning of postal vote fraud. Postal votes come out on 26th April.
The absolute rule is this. Voters must fill in the ballot papers themselves and should do so in secrecy. No-one other than the voter should handle the ballot paper. However you have every right to seek to persuade voters to vote for
Respect in a non-coercive way.
•We have a lot of new tabloids coming into the Club Row today, to provide you with substantial material to supplement your campaigning. . It lists all of our council candidates on the back.
•A new ward leaflet will be out in time for Jumma prayers. The new leaflet had the council candidates and the MP numbers on.
•Just to share a short story...a Respect canvasser knocked on a voter's door today, he was white mid-20s and looked like a professional, the first question he asked me was what's our position on Trident, before even knowing my name or any of
our local policies.

George Galloway was set upon by a group of Muslim extremists while campaigning in East London this afternoon. Three men, believed to belong to the extreme sect Islam4UK, the latest name for Al-Muhajiroun, were arrested and subsequently charged with public order offences.Galloway, who is standing in the Poplar and Limehouse constituency, was with a party of supporters in Watney Market around 3pm when he and his colleagues were first abused and then attacked by the group. "They called me a filthy Kaffir" said Galloway, "and shouted that no one should shake the 'filthy Kaffir's hand'. This lot are the latest incarnation of the banned group Al-Muhajiroun. They don't want Muslims to vote, they don't believe in democracy, and because I encourage Muslims to vote and take a full part in our society they hate me. My party, Respect, is the antidote to these despicable extremists." Galloway's assistant Kevin Ovenden had his phone smashed in the incident and other supporters were abused and jostled. Galloway was also attacked, held hostage and received death threats from Al-Muhajiroun, then called Al-Gourabaa, in the 2005 General Election.

After a run of more than four years the highly popular radio show - The Mother of All Talkshows - has been killed off by the TalkSport management. I believe this is a business mistake, but then I don't run the radio station and such decisions are not mine to take. I will always be grateful to TalkSport for giving me the opportunity to launch the Mother of All Talkshows, and particularly to Bill Ridley and Sean Dilley who got me started there. Both taught me a lot - and Ridley encouraged what became my trademark - a stand up delivery which gave the thing its public platform feel. The show became something of a phenomenon. An audience of hundreds of thousands of people switched off their televisions or gave up going out, on Fridays and Saturdays between 10pm and 1am. These impressive listenership figures nonetheless under-stated the audience. For statistical reasons the Friday night show was counted in with Ian Collins Sunday to Thursday audience then averaged out. Anyone who has heard Collins show and heard the Friday night MOATS will understand how seriously that must have skewed the audience figures. The show's huge popularity amongst minority ethnic communities was also difficult fully to catch with the blunt instrument of Rajar market research. And the substantial listenership in other countries on the internet was of course not counted at all. All in all the show became something of real importance to the people who listened and contributed, whether they agreed with its political thrust or not. It will be obvious that I consider its demise premature, and I am determined to try to keep it alive. It is unlikely that the TalkSport management will change their mind and re-instate the show - but you never know. They say they want me to stay at the station, but they have not said for what when or how. Other stations are interested but TalkSport's national platform is unique. The BBC doesn't allow presenters to have a point of view. For all its faults TalkSport was special in that, even if now all the points of view are of one particular kind. There is no-one left to speak up for the BA strikers, the Palestinians, or to speak out against the wars to mention just a few of the most obvious. That there IS an audience which either supports my views on these kind of issues, or that just wants to hear these views aired, is self-evident. So.. I'm going to launch an internet radio station. It will be called Rebel radio, it will host the Mother of All Talk Shows as well as other shows by me and other rebel voices, including radicals from other sides in politics. It will be free speech radio, beyond Ofcom and the kind of fate which killed off Top Cat on TalkSport. It will be controversial, funny, campaigning, informative, it will be Talk radio for thinking people. It will be radical and above all it will never ever be dull. In the beginning it will have to paid for by donations or by subscriptions or by both, we're working on that. If we can build and show a substantial audience, advertisers and sponsors may be attracted. But one way or another we will launch this rebel radio. The radio insurrection will begin soon. Stay tuned register your interest and be ready. Its just over the rainbow. And we are all going to get there, together. George Galloway MP House of Commons March 2010

George Galloway has written to Labour's General Secretary Ray Collins, MP Jim Fitzpatrick and Labour candidate Rushanara Ali, demanding Tower Hamlets Labour Party election agent and council candidate Graham Taylor should be sacked and disciplinary action taken against him and other members. This follows Islamophobic and racist comments appearing on Taylor's Facebook.
Taylor attended a meeting on election arrangements at Tower Hamlets Town Hall with the chief executive Kevan Collins, chief legal officer Isabella Freeman and chief elections officer Louise Stamp, on Monday evening.
Before going to the meeting he put out the following message on his Facebook group - "Graham Taylor is off to that centre of Islamic fundamentalism - Tower Hamlets Town Hall". A number of his Facebook friends then responded, including former councillor and Labour's council candidate for Stepney ward Judith Gardner. Gardner wrote "Give em hell!". Another friend wrote the disgusting racist comment: "Bring some pork scratchings" and another "Pork!".
"This is a disgraceful example of the Islamophobia and racism now infecting parts of Tower Hamlets Labour Party," said an outraged George Galloway. "The comments were made just before the Dispatches programme on Monday, which a number of Labour members co-operated with and in some cases inspired. These comments should have no place anywhere, never mind in a party claiming its commitment to opposing racism and respect for people of faith.
"I am demanding that Taylor is sacked as Rushanara Ali's election agent and his nomination for council candidate withdrawn. He is clearly not a fit and proper person to hold office in the Labour Party. And former councillor Judith Gardner should also be stood down. I don't know if the other contributors are Labour Party members but, if they are, they also should be subject to action by the Labour Party, up to and including their expulsion."

There was another murder most foul of course, in Dubai recently - that of the Palestinian official Mahmoud al-Mabhouh. No fewer than 18 brave men and women of the Israeli security service Mossad massed in the desert kingdom to cold-bloodedly murder one man. They surprised him in his hotel bedroom where he was, unarmed and without a bodyguard, then electrocuted to the head to stun him and suffocated, put into his pyjamas and tucked in nicely. Somehow, the hotel door was locked from the inside and the murderers left him to be discovered and, they hoped, assumed to have died from natural causes. But they reckoned without the plucky police chief and bravery of the authorities in Dubai. What they discovered would have been covered up in many countries in the world on the basis it would cause the mother of all political storms. They discovered the true cause of death and then pieced together a jigsaw of CCTV images from airport shopping malls and every conceivable hotel angle. They identified first the suspicious foreigners, got their hands thanks to Jordan on two Palestinian traitors, tracked the communications of the gang to a nerve centre in Austria and, most explosively of all, revealed that the murderers were travelling on British, Irish, French and German passports, some of them diplomatic passports, which had all been stolen by thieves working for Mossad in absolute defiance of promises given to foreign governments by Israel in the wake of previous crimes. The Israeli press has done more than anyone else to uncover all of this. It is not denied by anyone in Israel that they committed this act of state terrorism in a third country using the sovereign property of friendly countries to do so. So what is to be done? First there must be a comprehensive review of Britain's relations with Israel. Now that they have been caught crimson-handed not just in an act of terrorism but endangering the safety of British citizens travelling or living abroad, it's time to say enough is enough. There can be no more crawling to the Israel lobby who mobilise thousands of sycophants to complain every time people like me write or broadcast items like this, hoping to intimidate editors and proprietors into putting a lid on criticism of Israel. It usually works. It frightened the BBC into the scandal of the Disasters Emergency Committee appeal that never was during the recent Gaza War and it has circumscribed my work on both Talksport and even Press TV during the last year. The Record's editor is still busy, months after an article I wrote here, dealing with complaints from "outraged Record readers"..in, er, Israel. Some people say they'll kill me. Maybe so; but if they do my son will pick up my banner. If they kill my son, my daughter will pick up the banner. If they kill her, others will pick up the banner of justice for the Palestinians. Israel cannot kill its way out of this pickle. Only an acknowledgement of its involvement in crimes against Palestine will begin to do that.

Respect MP George Galloway has hit out the amount of money spent on Public relations by the Ministry of Defence.
His comments were made after he released figures from the Ministry of Defence, obtained in response to a Parliamentary Question, which show a doubling of the budget for “public relations
activities”, including on external PR consultants, in the period when Britain joined George Bush’s wars on Afghanistan and Iraq.
The MoD has confirmed that between 2001 and 2006 the amount spent on spin increased from £35.1 million to £76.2 million.
Mr Galloway said, “Senior military figures have told the Chilcot inquiry that during this period, such was the rush to war, British troops were sent to the deserts of Iraq with jungle fatigues.
“It is clear that Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, however, were prepared to lavish money on the Ministry of Defence’s spin operation, which was deployed against military families who spoke out against
the war, such as Rose Gentle.
“The Iraq war was wrong for many more reasons than just the financial cost and the contempt that was shown for British forces, who were sent to kill and be killed on a lie.
“But these figures provide a fitting indictment of Blair and Brown: a bottomless pit of cash to try to sell a disastrous and illegal war.”

Mr. George Galloway (Bethnal Green and Bow) (Respect): Like the hon. Member for City of York (Hugh Bayley), I am a long-time member of the Labour campaign for proportional representation. Indeed, I am still a member, although not a member of the Labour party.
[Interruption.] I know, that’s me expelled now—I have blown it. I was a member of the campaign when the late Robin Cook was its chairman. Imagine my surprise to learn that the hon. Gentleman has been won over by the Government’s position, thereby leaving us.
Like the hon. Member for Foyle (Mark Durkan), I came here this evening to support amendment (b), standing in the name of the Liberal Democrats, although I almost lost the will to live as we approached the 50th minute of the speech by the hon. Member for Cambridge (David Howarth). I have sufficiently woken up that I will still vote for that amendment. However, in extremis, like the hon. Member for Foyle, I will support the Government, and for the same reasons: that what is proposed is a step forward and a slight improvement.
The Government are making a big mistake if they think that this little broom is going to sweep clean the Augean stables in this place. The labours of Hercules and the diversion of great rivers were required to cleanse the stench of those stables, and this little broom—this tiny little reform—will not do it. It will take far more radical proposals than this Government are likely to introduce to restore public trust in this place, and far more than have been canvassed in this debate, which, I am sorry to say, has been characterised by a complacent, joking, student debating society approach. [Interruption.] Well, it has. I have sat here for six and a half hours, shaking my head at the complacency on view on both sides. Members have no idea of the contempt out there in the country for the kind of debate and debating styles that have been on display this evening.
The reforms that we need in this place are beyond the reach of the existing Members of the House of Commons. That is why we urgently need a general election as soon as possible. We need to change the way in which we approach all our politics, and in my view, that includes retiring this very building. We need to acknowledge that it has become a museum ....

"Its mission statement says: “Trust is the foundation of the BBC: we are independent, impartial and honest.” "However, people are complaining bitterly to the BBC about its pro-Israel stance when reporting on the situation in the Holy Land."...
This is a brilliant article. Congratulations to Stuart Littlewood. The BBC's deferred Panorama episode was shown this week, supposedly about the West Bank Wall. About two-thirds of the programme comprised Israeli tallking heads, including the Mayor of Jerusalem, with his vision for the whole city, an American immigrant to Israel, intent on securing the land of the "forefathers", religious leaders explaining the historical rights of Israel, and others. But the other third did report Israeli brutality, illegal settlements and the undermining of Arab homes in Al-Quds, plus an interview at home with a Palestinian shot in the hip at point-blank range, in front of his children, with a throw-away line about a child shot dead in the same incident. The final scene was the only real footage of the wall, lasting less than 30 seconds as a backdrop for a piece to camera. Three to one is not a bad ratio for the BBC, it's more usually more like nine to one, but there's no doubting the overwhelming pro-Israeli bias in everything the BBC produces concerning Palestinian issues. And "rockets" are always the convenient fall-back when there's mention of UN Resolutions, international condemnation of illegal occupation, breaches of agreements etc. We can only strive to try and make changes.

George Galloway MP, a once fervent supporter of Obama, is one of the disillusioned.
He said: "I fell out with most of my left-wing friends by supporting him. I feel a bit foolish now.
"He has lost a huge amount of support among progressive people and the conservatives really hate him. He is walking down the middle of the road and getting knocked by both sides.
"Guantanamo is one of the factors, the deepening of the war in Afghanistan is another.
"He has thrown trillions of dollars at the banks, continued sanctions against Cuba and backs Israel 100 per cent.
"His foreign policy has been identical to Bush's. He has failed on all fronts."
Galloway believes Obama could be another one-term president, like Jimmy Carter
Clive Stafford Smith, director of Reprieve, which have campaigned for the closure of Guantanamo, said: "In some areas, all that Obama has managed to do is compromise his own beliefs in his effort to accommodate the extremists in his own country.
"This is sad and it may yet come to be his political epitaph."

Activists and officers injured after some of the 198 trucks led by British MP George Galloway are stopped from crossing into strip
Egyptian security forces clashed today with a pro-Palestinian convoy led by the British MP George Galloway as it tried to deliver aid supplies into the Gaza Strip.
The convoy of 198 trucks and more than 500 supporters left London a month ago hoping to enter Gaza despite the Israeli economic blockade. The trucks are now at el-Arish, an Egyptian port on the Mediterranean, a few miles south of Gaza.
Several protestors and police officers were injured after clashes early today. Reuters reported that Egyptian police threw stones at the crowd and arrested seven demonstrators, while some members of the convoy held four harbour police officers. Police fired water cannon to disperse the crowd, where they had gathered to receive their aid trucks.
Israel's strict blockade of Gaza, now in place for more than two years, prevents all exports and limits imports to a few humanitarian items. The policy has grown ever tighter since Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist movement, won parliamentary elections in early 2006 and then seized full security control of Gaza a year later. Israel now regards the strip, home to 1.5 million Palestinians, as a "hostile entity".
But Egypt too has kept its one border crossing with Gaza, at Rafah, largely closed. Egyptian officials told the convoy some of their trucks could not pass through Rafah, but had to enter into southern Israel and then pass through an Israeli-controlled crossing into Gaza. There was no guarantee that the trucks would be allowed to enter the strip.
Galloway said that was unacceptable. "We refused this," he said. "It is completely unconscionable that 25%of our convoy should go to Israel and never arrive in Gaza. Because nothing that ever goes to Israel, ever arrives in Gaza."
Egypt has tried to curb a wave of pro-Palestinian demonstrations in the past month after hundreds of foreigners tried to reach the Gaza border to mark the one-year anniversary of Israel's war in Gaza in which nearly 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis were killed.
At the same time, Egyptian officials are building a new, underground steel wall along their border with Gaza in an apparent effort to prevent smuggling. Hundreds of smuggling tunnels dug by Palestinians reach into northern Egypt and supply Gaza with a wide range of products from food to cars. Israel and the US have said they are concerned about weapons smuggling.
Israeli military officials said today they would consult more closely with their legal advisers during future combat operations after a wave of international criticism over last year's war in Gaza.
General Gabi Ashkenazi, the chief of staff, has ordered the military to consult with legal advisors not just while planning an operation but during an offensive as well, officials said.
The orders appeared to be a reaction to the serious, documented allegations of war crimes raised by human rights groups and, most prominently, by a UN investigation which was strongly critical of Israel's policy and accused both the Israeli military and Hamas of war crimes.
However, although the military has said it is investigating some incidents from the war the Israeli government has still not agreed to the major independent inquiry that the UN investigation recommended. Hamas too has rejected any such inquiry. Israeli leaders have insisted their troops did not breach international law and were fighting in Gaza only to halt Palestinian militant rocket fire into southern Israel.
The threat of further investigations still remains, however. An Israeli military visit to Britain was cancelled last week for fear of arrests over war crimes allegations and last month a British court briefly issued an arrest warrant for the former Israeli foreign minister Tzipi Livni before withdrawing it after realising she was not in the country.

Cairo announces three-day opening as Gaza march activists begin to head home.
On the Egyptian side of the border, hundreds of international activists held repeated protests around Cairo this week demanding the authorities permanently reopen the crossing point.
Around 1,300 members of the Gaza Freedom March (GFM) had gathered in Egypt from more than 40 countries to march to Gaza with aid and supplies as a sign of solidarity with the Palestinians there.
However, Egyptian authorities barred the group from crossing the border, citing security reasons, and instead offering to allow 100 members to cross.
Up to 92 delegates did eventually cross into Gaza, meeting with non-governmental organisations and witnessing first-hand the devastation wrought by last year's war and the continuing siege of the Strip, march organisers told Al Jazeera.
Many of the GFM activists were leaving Cairo on Sunday for their respective countries with a sense of accomplishment, Ann Wright, a co-ordinator for the march, said.
On Friday, the Gaza Freedom March approved the "Cairo Declaration" , a document calling for the end of Israeli occupation and Palestinian self-determination, as well as for "boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) to compel Israel to comply with international law".
Meanwhile, a long-delayed aid convoy destined for the Gaza Strip is expected to arrive in the coastal territory on Monday.
The Viva Palestina convoy, with 210 lorries full of medicine and other supplies, set out from the UK nearly a month ago.
A ferry carrying the supplies reportedly arrived in the Egyptian port El Arish on the Mediterranean on Sunday after sailing from Latakia in Syria.

Members of the Viva Palestina international aid convoy to Gaza have begun a hunger strike in protest at the Egyptian government's refusal to allow the convoy entry onto its soil. Diplomatic negotiations are also taking place between the Turkish and Egyptian governments over the convoy's entry to Egypt. IHH, Turkey's main humanitarian aid agency, has 63 vehicles travelling on the convoy. The Syrian government has also provided aid and vehicles, as has the government of Malaysia. More than 400 people from 17 countries are travelling on the 150 vehicle convoy, which is taking medical, humanitarian and educational aid to Gaza. The convoy departed London on 6 December and have travelled nearly 3,000 miles across Europe and the Middle East. However, the convoy and its cargo of aid is now stopped in the Jordanian port town of Aqaba, having been denied entry into Egypt. British MP, George Galloway, who is travelling with the convoy, said: 'Israel has kept Gaza under siege for three-and-half years against international law. It has not allowed aid or rebuilding materials in following its attack on Gaza earlier this year. Our convoy is determined to break the siege and take in urgently needed supplies Spirits are high in our camp in Aqaba, and we are going nowhere except to Gaza.' It was at 11.25 am on December 27 2008, that Israel dropped its first bombs on the besieged population of Gaza. Three weeks later, following a sustained air, land and sea assault, more than 1,400 Palestinians had been killed. The Viva Palestina hunger strikers will consume only liquids until the convoy is allowed entry into Egypt. Convoy members will also mark the first anniversary of the beginning of Israel's Operation Cast Lead by holding a march through Aqaba, jointly with the Jordanians. In the evening, more than 1,400 candles will be lit for a vigil. The convoy has been jointly organised by the charity Viva Palestina and the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, the UK's largest organisation campaigning for solidarity with the Palestinian people. Well folks, as you awake today from your Christmas hangover, over 500 people from 20 countries, in 250 vehicles loaded with Humanitarian Aid, are left stranded in Aqaba, Jordan, having been refused permission to enter Egypt. From Ireland, 10 volunteers in 2 ambulances, a van, and a truck loaded with Humanitarian Aid are part of this convoy. The convoy is organised by "Viva Palestina", a charity founded by George Galloway, MP. The Egyptian Government have placed 3 conditions on the convoy if it wants to enter Egypt. 1. We hand all our vehicles and aid over to UNRA. 2. We drive 500 miles back to Syria, and take a 24 hour ferry through the Suez Canal. 3. We have to ask Israel for permission to cross from Egypt to Gaza. All 3 conditions have been flatly rejected by everyone on the convoy, as we want to cross into Gaza and hand our aid over to the Palestinians ourselves. Would you phone Canada to ask permission to enter the US? Would you ask France for permission to go to Germany? For the 1st time, Egypt have now openly admitted that they are under control of Israel/US. This has been the lead story on Al Jazeera for the past 24 hours, and there are media teams from all over the Arab world here in Aqaba following this story. Needless to say, everyone watching is totally outraged by Egypt's complicity with Israel/US in denying this convoy of aid to reach Gaza. Needless to say, the western media have so far refused to cover this story. Yesterday, Christmas Day, I dressed up as Santa to lighten the mood, and everyones sprirts lifted. Al Jazeera interviewed Santa, who explained that the children in Gaza were the only ones in the whole world who didn't recieve any presents. Santa explained that while flying through the air on his sleigh with the reindeers, he was stopped and refused entry. Santa was upset as this was the only place in the world he could not visit. Tomorrow marks the 1st anniversary of the start of the 22 day massacre of over 1,400 people. In solidarity, we are all going to embark on a fast. We will all fast for as long as it takes for us to get into Gaza with our aid. We are calling on people all over the world to fast with us, and with the Palestinians, who fast every day due to the illegal siege imposed upon them by Israel/US/Egypt. It's time to take a stand and say "Enough Is Enough". This siege has got to stop, for the sake of humanity, and our aid must be allowed to reach the stricken people in Gaza. I am calling on you to contact the Egyptian Embassy and demand that we be allowed to enter Gaza, and deliver our aid. The contact details for the Egyptian Embassy in Dublin are: +353-1-6606718 / +353-1-6606566 / consular@embegyptireland.ie The contact details for the Egyptian Embassy in London are: 0044-20-7499-3304 /

Please contact them, and express your outrage at their refusal to allow Humanitarian Aid into Gaza, and to let them know that you will never travel to Egypt again, as long as they are the lap dogs for Israel/US.
Please forward this message on to everyone you know, and ask them to do the same. Plus, please reply and leave a message of support for everyone who is stranded here in Aqaba, and for the Palestinians who need our support now, more than ever.

DAILYSTAR Wed, 23 Dec 2009 09:
Last year, during the Israeli bombardment of Gaza, Wallace was part of an American group to deliver badly needed medical supplies into the largely destroyed enclave. “There were people and convoys from all over the world; it was like a people’s United Nations. Not many got in, of course,” she says. “Our aid was a drop in the bucket, but we did bring five tons of pediatric medicine, ambulances, milk powder and cereal.”
One year on from the assault which killed an estimated 1,300 Palestinians, over 400 of whom were children, Wallace is preparing her return to Gaza.
This time, however, she will have the support of more than 2,000 people from 43 countries, participating in the Gaza Freedom March on December 31. The group will join a convoy founded by British MP George Galloway, Viva Palestina, in marching on the city to protest the ongoing Israeli blockade.

Amman - A humanitarian convoy containing 210 trucks laden with basic food items and medical supplies destined for the Gaza Strip arrived in Jordan on Tuesday. The convoy, known as "Viva Palestina," was welcomed by the Secretary General of the Jordanian Hashemite Charity Authority Ahmad Amyan who represented Prime Minister Samir Rifai.
Also welcoming the convoy were scores of Jordanian politicians, activists and unionists, led by Abdullah Obeidat, president of the Professional Associations Council.
The convoy, led by British lawmaker George Galloway, left London on December 3 and is scheduled to enter the Gaza Strip on December 27 to mark the first anniversary of the Israeli attack on the besieged Palestinian territory that left over 1,300 Palestinians dead and about 5,000 injured.
Galloway told reporters at the Jordanian-Syria border that he was accompanied by 450 activists, including 30 Americans, 150 Turks and a number of Europeans.
The convoy would spend two days in Jordan before leaving the Red Sea port of Aqaba for the Gaza Strip, Galloway said, appealing to Egyptian authorities to facilitate the convoy's passage through the Rafah crossing.

"DAMASCUS, (PIC)-- Upon his arrival at Damascus international airport, British lawmaker George Galloway, who is leading an aid convoy to the besieged Gaza Strip, expressed his dismay at the absence of the Arab role in organizing aid convoys to Gaza. “It is a shame that this convoy is coming from Europe and not from the Arab countries,” Galloway was quoted as saying.
He expressed his thanks to the Syrian authorities for facilitating the entry of Lifeline 3 convoy organized by the UK-based Viva Palestina movement, describing Syria as a fortress and the symbol of pride that never forsook Palestine.
In a press statement on Monday to the Palestinian information center (PIC), Galloway said that Lifeline 3 convoy is a message of solidarity with the Palestinian people in Gaza on the first anniversary of the Israeli war.
The British activist added that this convoy is aimed to direct the world’s attention on this anniversary to the war criminals in Israel on one hand and to the valiant Palestinian resistance on the other hand, expressing hope that Egypt would read the massage from this perspective. “We come in peace to Egypt to get safely to Palestine,” he underlined.
The activist also said that the growing pressures on the British government resulted in the arrest warrant against former Israeli foreign minister Tzipi Livni, noting the pro-Palestine pressure groups in Europe are working on tightening the noose on Israel.....
For its part, the Palestinian popular struggle front strongly denounced on Sunday Egypt for complying with the Zio-American dictates and tightening the siege on Gaza through building a steel wall on its borders in Rafah area......."

Bikya Masr sat down with British Member of Parliament George Galloway as he traverses Europe, leading the third Viva Palestina convoy from the UK to Gaza in order to deliver much needed aid to the impoverished Palestinian territory.
Currently, the group is pushing on from Turkey, where they received a warm welcome. The goal is to pass through Syria, Jordan and Egypt before entering Gaza via the Rafah Border Crossing.
Galloway has been in Parliament since 1987.
Bikya Masr : What makes Viva Palestina so important and why did you feel the need to do this?
George Galloway : This isn’t about the aid, as important as that is. But to put it in context our convoy amounts to around 200 vehicles. Gaza needs about 400 trucks a day in relief. These convoys are a statement that we won’t rest until this illegal siege is broken. We get amazing support and help through all the countries we traverse and we’re getting the message across about how the Palestinians in Gaza are suffering. The convoys also, I believe, provide a beacon of hope for the beleaguered people of Gaza that the world has not forgotten them.
The idea came to me when we were protesting outside the Israeli embassy in London when the war broke out. It was necessary to protest but not sufficient. This is the third such convoy we have run and by far the most successful so far.
BM : Do you see it as an educational endeavor that can engage the world about the issues facing Israel/Palestine?
GG : I think world opinion has changed markedly since the war last year and the massive and disproportionate assault on Gaza. We are just underlining the message with our convoys and hopefully educating and propagandizing as we go.
BM : In the UK, what is the overall sense of a mission like this? Has it ostracized you with your colleagues?
GG : Ostracized? Not at all. My colleagues are fiercely and determinedly behind it. There is no dissent. We could have hope, although not expected, better media coverage in the UK but those in the cause know what is happening.
BM : The Israeli government isn’t too keen on the Viva Palestina convoy. How do you try to rectify this sort of sentiment?
GG : We don’t deal with the Israeli government so I don’t know and certainly don’t care.
BM : How has the Jewish community in the UK received these convoys? The Muslim community?
GG : There hasn’t been noticeable support from any Jewish organizations -rather than the reverse – but progressive Jews support us. Bear in mind that we took a group of rabbis on our last convoy. The Muslim reception has been fabulous, particularly in the poorer parts of Great Britain.
BM : What are the overall goals of this specific convoy and how do you spread the word?
GG : I think I answered the first part in my first answer. We spread the word through our websites, enormous databases and through mosques and sympathetic groups. We haven’t been at a loss for support thus far. You can find out more about Viva Palestina by going to www.vivapalestina,org or at www.georgegalloway.com

MPs' expenses are knocked into a top hat by the eye-watering news that David Cameron's star parliamentary candidate Zac Goldsmith - son of billionaire Jimmy and brother of comely Jemima Khan - has robbed the British taxpayer of £5.8million in dodged tax.
Nothing could speak louder about the nature of the would-be Tory government than this.
There are more Old Etonians and other public school types on Cameron's front bench than at any time since the 19th century. Their treasurer and chief funder Lord Ashcroft presides over their affairs from the tax exile of Belize.
As Gordon Brown voluntarily paid back the £500 for the painting of his shed, how about would-be MP and non-domicile Zac pays back the £5million in unpaid taxes? From time to time, I come across the deluded and the deceived who've fallen for the "We're closing in" rhetoric of the campaign against benefit cheats. Of course nobody should be allowed to rip off the benefits system. But why don't we start at the top, where the big money is going missing? Why don't we start with Lord Ashcroft and Zac Goldsmith? If Brown and Darling were men instead of mice they'd do just that, and quickly.
Who knows, guys, it might even help in the forthcoming election? Did anyone check that Tory defector, now a New Labour Defence Minister, Quentin Davies - surely the only rat ever to clamber aboard a sinking ship - hasn't slipped in a claim for the removal of that hump on his back? In the middle of a war in which he is the spectacularly unsuccessful procurement minister - a combination of essential equipment never ordered and a £6billion overspend on the otiose, the grandiose and the merely gross - he sat down to compose a £20,000 expense claim for, among other things, the repair of the bell tower on his stately home. A Labour MP, that is, with a stately home. And a bell tower. There is another Labour MP, also a Tory defector, Shaun Woodward. Married to a Sainsbury, he has SEVEN homes worth tens of millions and complete with butlers. He is the richest man in parliament, one of the richest in the country. But that doesn't stop him sitting down and filling in an expense claim form on which he extracts to the penny the exact maximum in second home allowance.
What's wrong with these people? Then there's Tory grandee, head of the controversial Conservative Friends of Israel, James Arbuthnot MP. He's the chairman of the Commons Defence Select Committee. In the middle of a war, he too had other things on his mind. He might have been watching the history channel. Or Newsnight, Question Time or the BBC.
Instead one night last summer he was watching the shopping channel QVC. As you do when you're a top parliamentarian. His eye was caught by a three-pack of garlic crushers and peelers. Well, every home should have one. But three? And at the public expense? Even Gordon Brown claimed £500 for the re-painting of his "summer house" - what the rest of us call a shed - in Queensferry.
Why? Tory toff Lord Snooty Cameron, who last year claimed to cut back his Wisteria, now bills us £1000 for Aga oil.
Two millennia ago, the Roman Emperor Nero famously fiddled whilst Rome burned. Our rulers fiddle while they burn our money and destroy what's left of parliament's reputation.
Ask not for whom Mr Quentin's bell tolls? It tolls for all of them.

This article is taken from the forthcoming issue of RESPECT Quarterly paper November 2009 brought us to a turning point in Afghanistan. The point is whispered in the corridors of Westminster, but few MPs are prepared to acknowledge it openly - this war is lost. Yet, we are faced with the spectacle of a US President, elected on an anti-war ticket, sending 30,000 more young men and women into the maw. The other NATO countries have announced a further 7,000 troops including from Britain. This will bring the numbers of foreign troops in Afghanistan to more than 150,000 and the US deployment alone will cost a further $30 billion. The waste of lives and money is astonishingly stark. Does Obama believe that the war can be won? The clue is in the firm date for starting the US withdrawal that came with the latest troop surge. Obama wants the troops to start leaving in July 2011 and to be all out by the end of his first term in December 2012. His design is for the pathetic Afghan army and corrupt police force to take up ’security’ following the failing model of Iraq, which remains as dangerous as ever. The catalogue of catastrophe, stemming from Afghanistan, is staggering. ....

George Galloway, a Member of Parliament in London, on Wednesday demanded international enquiry into the proposed Tipaimukh dam by India.
"If the dam is built Bangladesh, particularly, its Sylhet area will be serious damaged and this projected should be halted," he said.
The environment and climate of Bangladesh will be seriously effected and as a vast area of Bangaldesh will be deserted in the dry season and flood will take place in the rainy season if the dam is constructed.
He made the remark at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity auditorium in the afternoon.
Galloway said that as a Member of Parliament in London he represents 40,000 people of Syljht in London and he is duty bound to see the advantages and disadvantages of this people, who will be victimised by the proposed Tipaimukh dam.
He said his party, Respect Party UK, has staged demonstration before the Indian High Commission office last month against the dam.
He said that he is campaigning against the dam allover the world and building awareness about the impact of the proposed dam.

News arrives from the north of another great courtroom victory for your columnist, yours truly, and I'm as happy as a bear gulping down a leaping salmon.
Readers may recall that earlier this year while addressing, among others, the audience at the UN building in New York City (site of the mass murder of 9/11) I was banned from entering Canada on the grounds I may be a terrorist.
This because I had delivered a convoy of aid to the besieged Gaza Strip just after it had been flattened by Israel. You know, potentially dangerous stuff, like wheelchairs and ambulances.
The far-right government of that once kindly country has been making a habit of banning dissenters, at the same time welcoming killers like George W Bush for well-paid speaking tours.
And the suspicion is abroad that its role as Benjamin Netanyahu's main international cheerleader may have unduly influenced it in what are surely purely Canadian immigration decisions.
Last week the Canadian Chief Justice granted me leave to appeal against the decision despite ferocious (and expensive) opposition from the Canadian Government.
As only one in 10 of such applications is granted and my legal team are working for nothing it was David v Goliath stuff. And we won.
If the Canadian Tories had any sense they would now back down and let me in. I'm going to win the case if they don't the and there must be better things to spend their country's money on. And if I do win; just think of the crowds, coverage, not to mention book sales when I enter in triumph.
I did warn them, when it comes to courts I always get my man.

British Member of Parliament, George Galloway, delivers a speech on the `flouting of international law` at the Kuala Lumpur Conference to Criminalise War.
He started his speech with an account of the efforts he and others have made to reach the Palestinian Gaza area which is under siege by the Israeli occupying forces. He recounted the experience of meeting a young girl who said "where is this Arab world they teach about us in school. Where is this Ummah (nation/community)... why did they allow us to face this alone", as she stood in the rubble left an orphan after an Israeli attack that killed her parents and left her homeless.
Galloway said they also faced many difficulties in Egypt "about which the least said the better" and that he and others intend to go "over and over again", and in a few weeks, intend to go with a convoy of 500 vehicles 5 hours long, through Europe to reach Gaza. He hoped that Malaysians would join the convoy.
Galloway pointed out that the need to do this is because of the silence and red carpet treatment given to the Israelis, whilst their victims are called terrorists. He said that "this is the world order we have today. Those that call themselves emperors, invent their own laws to bring war, destruction, sanction and disease upon others."
British MP George Galloway said that the Israelis used illegal weapons and destroyed the economy of Lebanon and the schools and infrastructure of Lebanon but were met with the tough resistance of Hizbollah.
In reference to the speech of Dr Mahathir at the opening of the conference, which aim is to make war an international crime, he said that still the aggressors can be defeated, and he said that Iraq was destroyed and a million Iraqis were killed, and three million Iraqi refugees - the lucky ones here in Malaysia - and the unlucky ones on the streets of Jordan. He said that in spite of this "they did not break Iraq" and that resistance would continue until victory.
Galloway pointed out that those states, including his own, Britain, that possess weapons of mass destruction, sit on the United Nations Security council and dictate their will. He said that there is no evidence that Iran is planning to produce any nuclear weapons, as confirmed by the International Atomic Energy Agency IAEA, is under threat of sanctions, but Israel which possesses nuclear weapons is not threatened with any sanctions. He confirmed that he is against nuclear weapons, and there are photographs of him being carried upside down by British police officers during an anti-nuclear protest, but that he is also against the hypocrisy and double standards in relation to nuclear weapons. He pointed out that Iraq was invaded because it has no nuclear weapons, and that North Korea would never be invaded precisely because it possesses such weapons. He wondered what message this sent to the world, and that it clearly means one should obtain weapons of mass destruction if one does not want to be invaded by the "hypocrites and war criminals."
Galloway said that when the journalist in Iraq took of his shoes and threw them at the head of George W. Bush he was speaking for millions of people in the world. He also said that the "poodle Tony Blair" was the least suitable to lead any peace effort or the European Union as is currently the plan, and that brave people are declaring the former British Prime Minister who launched the war on Iraq together with the USA, a war criminal.

A PALESTINIAN Liberation Organisation flag hanging from Dundee City Council’s chambers caused controversy among government ministers when it was first flown during the Thatcher era, a new document has revealed.
The flag, which represents the twinning of Dundee and the West Bank town of Nablus in November 1980, was hung by the Labour party under the suggestion of then-city councillor George Galloway.
According to a newly declassified UK Government document, the move so incensed Conservative ministers that they considered various ways of removing it.
One civil servant suggested it could be sabotaged, writing on April 3, 1981: “The flag is in a very secluded part of the council chambers and could be stolen, destroyed or damaged very easily if anyone had a mind to take this kind of action.”
Yesterday Mr Galloway, who left Dundee in 1983 and is now an MP for the Respect party in London, said he was surprised civil servants had suggested sabotaging the flag.
He said: “This was clearly an incitement of an illegal act and one which, when I get the file, I may well pursue.
“It is quite chilling to learn that in the undergrowth of government such measures are canvassed.”
The government eventually conceded there was no legal basis for forcing the council to remove the flag, and a PLO standard remains at the city chambers today.

Hundreds of mourners said their final goodbyes to trade union "giant" Bill Speirs at a moving funeral service yesterday.
First Minister Alex Salmond and MP George Galloway were among those who turned out to honour the former STUC leader, who died last week.
Other political figures who joined Bill's devastated wife Pat and children David and Jaki included Scottish Labour leader Iain Gray, former leader Wendy Alexander, former health minister Susan Deacon and firebrand socialist Tommy Sheridan.
More than 150 people stood outside Renfrew Town Hall and listened to the humanist service on a PA system after the venue's 250 capacity was reached.
A much-loved figure, Bill died aged 57 after a long illness. He had served the STUC from 1979 to 2006, rising to general secretary in 1998.
At the ceremony, his wife Pat said: "He was committed to what he cared about. He cared endlessly for people and none of us will ever know all the things that he did to help people over the years."
Fighting back tears, she added: "Farewell to my bright, funny, lovable husband. As long as I live, I will wish I still walked with you."
The service included many songs chosen by Bill and, in accordance with his wishes, ended with mourners roaring along to socialist anthem The Internationale.
Eulogy
In his eulogy, Respect MP George Galloway said: "A great oak has fallen in the sparser political forest with the passing of Bill Speirs.
"In many distant parts of the world his death is being noticed and mourned.
"There are people as far away as South Africa and Palestine and indeed many parts of the Arab world, former Yugoslavia, the former USSR, whose lives Bill touched and graced and improved, who today are mourning."
Former first minister Jack McConnell said: "His special contribution was his belief that ordinary people, mobilised and organised, could effect change for themselves and change in others.
"Bill Speirs built bridges between people, not walls to keep people apart.
"Scotland lost a special son last week. We all lost a special friend.
"But we remember today the man, his immense contribution, his fun, his intellect, his style, his inspiration and his values of decency, compassion and respect."

George Galloway has paid an heartfelt tribute to former union leader Bill Speirs at his funeral attended by leading political figures and hundreds of other mourners.
The former Labour politician said a “great oak has fallen in the sparser political forest with the passing of Mr Speirs” a former STUC general secretary who has died at the age of 57 after a long illness.
He also said regarded him as an “older, more sophisticated brother.”
Those who attended Renfrew Town Hall included First Minister Alex Salmond, Labour leader Ian Gray and former First Minister Jack McConnell.
The building was packed with former colleagues, fellow activists, relatives and well wishers forcing left-wing firebrand Tommy Sheridan and former Labour leader Wendy Alexander to stand on the pavement outside.
Mr Galloway told mourners: “In many distant parts of the world the passing of Bill Speirs is being noticed and mourned.
"There are people as far away as South Africa and Palestine and indeed many parts of the Arab world, former Yugoslavia, the former USSR, whose lives Bill touched and graced and improved who today are mourning his passing.
The Respect MP, who saluted as the former union chief’s coffin passed by him in a hearse, added: "He was an eagle, a leader. I will never, ever, ever forget Bill Speirs and what he meant in my life, and I suspect I am not alone in that."
In his tribute, Mr McConnell said it was "a real honour" to be able to pay his respects to the trade unionist and that Scotland had lost a “special son.”
He said: "I am proud to have known Bill, and learned from him over the past 30 years. This past week, friends and colleagues have used a range of words to describe Bill Speirs: intellect, passion, humour, energy, motivated and motivating, internationalist, loyal friend, decent, charismatic.
"But his special contribution was in his belief that ordinary people, mobilised and organised, could effect change. Change for themselves and change in others.
"He believed that they could make an impact and have an influence on their community, their company or their country.
"Bill Speirs built bridges between people, not walls to keep people apart.
"He was never ending in his passionate belief that Scotland would be a better more democratic place, a more just society, with a Scottish Parliament in place. Now it is here but he is gone.
"Scotland lost a special son last week. We all lost a special friend. We will miss him and his huge contribution to our national life.”,
The former leader added that mourners were there to remember his “immense contribution, his fun, his intellect, his style, his inspiration, and his values of decency, compassion and respect."
Mr Speirs joined the STUC as an assistant secretary in 1979. He became deputy general secretary in 1988 and general secretary 10 years later.
STV Thu, 01 Oct 2009
Family, friends, politicians, civic leaders and even the odd political opponent will pack Renfrew Town Hall on Friday lunchtime for the funeral service for Bill Speirs.
The former STUC General Secretary died last week at the age of 57.
The funeral venue is an indication of the sheer numbers expected to attend to mark the life of one of the most talented leaders the Union movement has ever produced.
Tributes will be led by George Galloway MP, former First Minister Jack McConnell MSP and Campbell Christie.
This will be an old fashioned socialist funeral where some of the causes close to Mr Speirs will be celebrated in speech, song and even symbol. His coffin is expected to be draped by the Saltire, the Red Flag and that of Palestine. Arthur Johnston will lead tribute in song as mourners recall the life of this socialist and internationalist.
After the service his body will be laid to rest at Arkleston Cemetery in Renfrew.
When Thatcherism was at its height, Mr Speirs' reputation blossomed as an articulate and strategically sharp operator in defence of workers. He was on the vanguard of anti-Conservative agitation against the Poll Tax and was a keen architect of the cross-party Scotland United campaign.
As a former Labour Party chairman he was a committed member, but was never narrow or sectarian. At the STUC, his eight years as General Secretary from 1998 kept the unions at the centre of the political, cultural and civic debates of the time.
When he retired from the STUC three years ago, he had a long battle against illness. It pained family and friends who witnesses the slow and inevitable decline. Those who knew him will remember a giant of his generation, who had a natural gift for politics and all its many machinations.
They will remember most of all that he fought on behalf of people and causes that he loved.

A CONTROVERSIAL anti-Iraq war politician is due to make a speech in Haringey.
George Galloway, MP for Bethnal Green and Bow, will be delivering a speech at the West Indian Centre, in Clarendon Road on Tuesday, October 8.
Mr Galloway, a founding member of the Stop the War Coalition, will be speaking at a rally against the Afghanistan war on the 8th anniversary of its start.
The rebel MP's visit has been welcomed by Keith Flett, chairman of Haringey Trade Union Congress, who said: “It is a sobering thought that it is eight years since the ill-defined war in Afghanistan
started, a war that has seen the injury and death of many British troops.
“George Galloway is the best possible person to guide anti-war sentiment in the borough about where we have been in the last eight years and where we are going now.”

George Galloway this morning welcomed Respect’s by-election victory in Sparkbrook ward, Birmingham, as “spectacular”.
“This was a great victory for Respect. We beat a strong campaign from New Labour, got more than three times the Tory vote and pushed the Lib Dems into fourth place. This will send shock waves across the city of Birmingham and beyond.” George Galloway himself spent yesterday campaigning for Respect in the by-election.
George Galloway continued: “Our detailed analysis now shows we have a very good chance of winning in our three target seats of Birmingham Hall Green with Councillor Salma Yaqoob, Bethnal Green and Bow with Councillor Abjol Miah and Poplar and Limehouse where I am challenging the discredited New Labour MP Jim Fitzpatrick. My warmest congratulations to newly elected Councillor Shokat Ali who will add strongly to the team on Birmingham Council.”
Mr Galloway’s chances of beating sitting Labour minister, Jim Fitzpatrick, in Poplar and Canning Town were boosted recently by Fitpatrick’s crass gaffe in storming out of a wedding reception, and then contacting the press to condemn the couple for having segregated seating. Whatever Fitzpatrick’s personal views on segregation, this was extremely discourteous to the newly weds. It is also seemingly racist, as Fitzpatrick has never recorded any previous objection to stag nights and hen nights, which are traditionally gender segregated celebrations related to British weddings. Fitzpatrick’s highly ill advised outburst is attributed to a fierce faction fight within the local Labour Party.

WPN Scoop : WPN has been reliably told that Libya was explicitly told that unless al-Megrahi's appeal was dropped, then al-Megrahi's release could not be guaranteed. Whether the person conveying this information could deliver on the promise is academic as long as Libya believed it was from a source well connected to the British government. This is intimidation which perverted the course of justice, and which the judges, politicians and mass media were all too happy to turn a blind eye to. Al-Megrahi, wanting to maximise the chance of his release to spend his final few days with his family, thus agreed to drop the appeal despite his innocence, which the judges too readily accepted, apparently without proper regard to the review which found very serious concerns about this conviction. In effect, the judges preferred a miscarriage of justice to stand and for an innocent man to die with the label of mass-murder over him (and, by association, Libya), than to disclose the cover-up and conspiracy surrounding the Lockerbie case. This intimidation is therefore a criminal offense which the British police and crown prosecution service should investigate vigorously bearing in mind the huge public interest in discovering how a major crime got committed and who was really behind it, and how an innocent man got convicted of the crime. As a start, all the judges in the case should be interviewed under oath to try and uncover how much political interference there was in the prior judicial opinions in the case.

It would be foolish to conflate a few isolated incidents but to dismiss them as aberrations would be to deny the prejudice Muslims face across Europe.
A British Minister walks out of a Muslim constituent’s wedding protesting against segregation of male and female guests; a prominent moderate Muslim scholar, Tariq Ramadan, is hounded out of not one but two separate jobs for hosting a show on an Iranian television channel; aggressive right-wing campaigners in Switzerland demand removal of minarets from all mosques; and French President Nicolas Sarkozy calls for a ban on wearing burqa in public.
These incidents, occurring within days of each other in recent weeks in different parts of Europe, have coincided with a rash of new books portraying European Muslims in the darkest possible colour. Their alarmist tone has reminded many of the sort of things once written about European Jews.
Are these simply isolated events? Or is Europe in the grip of a new wave of Islamophobia?
Meanwhile, in Britain, Jim Fitzpatrick, the Minister who stormed out of a Muslim wedding protesting against the “segregation” of men and women, has been accused of “cultural insensitivity” and, worse, playing the “race card” to appease white working class voters in the run-up to next year’s general election. The latter accusation came not from the local Muslim community but from a prospective Tory candidate Tim Archer, who said: “I can’t help but feel he’s playing a certain race card to save his skin at the next election. I think it’s a desperate strategy.”

The Scottish Labour party, standing on each other's shoulders, could limbo under a snake and still leave headroom. I say that as someone brought up to believe Labour was the dynamic force for social justice, responsible for all that was good and decent in our society, from education to health provision, from pensions to prisons. But watching the Lockerbie debate, the fall-out and the duplicitous and venal behaviour of the New Labour numpties made me want to retch. People I know and have worked with, formerly progressives, became part of the mob baying for the head of Kenny MacAskill - not one overly endowed with grey matter, I grant you. But they knew beyond peradventure that he was doing exactly what their masters in Westminster wanted and would have done in a breath, had they the power. Gordon Brown's silence on the release of Abdelbaset al-Megrahi convicts him. No senior national New Labour figure has said Megrahi should not have been released or, had the UK government had the decision, he wouldn't have been. Jack Straw, looking more like a Dickens character every day (Sowerberry, the undertaker in Oliver Twist, is my choice), was never short of a scruple to get shot of. His leaked letters to MacAskill and the SNP government make it clear, having insisted on keeping Megrahi out of a prisoner exchange deal with Libya, he caved in when the gravity of the potential loss to BP was pointed out. This slimy about-turn, his spokesman said, was "academic" as the decision to free him was made in Edinburgh. Aye, right Jack! I've said before that MacAskill is a big palooka but his opponents in Scottish Labour haven't laid a glove on him and they have taken the dive. Perhaps I'm doing MacAskill down because he used nifty footwork to avoid the trap that surely would have caught him - releasing Megrahi under the prisoner exchange deal rather than humanitarian - and, if he had, he'd now be caught up in Straw's web of deceit. I'll bet canny old Uncle Eck had a word or two in his ear about that danger.

M.O.I. JR: Can you talk a little bit about your recent activities? You've been involved very heavily in this Gaza movement. And I know that in December it was your first time to the Middle East, and I know that the Israeli military, the Israeli navy rammed your ship, and destroyed the ship that you were on, and basically they looked like they tried to kill you and the other people that were on the ship, before you were rescued. I know the second time the Israeli's tried to pirate you into Israeli waters where they eventually took you to jail, and you spent a week in Israeli prison. And finally this third time, a few weeks ago, you finally made it to Gaza through Egypt where you and Charles Barron had to do a lot of negotiating on the border between Egypt and Gaza. Can you speak a little bit, and fill in the blanks and tell the people a little more about why you were doing what you were doing, and basically what exactly happened? Cynthia: Well basically after the spontaneous demonstrations erupted all over the country, and actually all over the world as a result of the Israeli military taking us captive, and putting us in prison for 7 days. There was 21 of us who were aboard the Spirit of Humanity, which is a Free Gaza boat. As a result of that there were several nationals from the United Kingdom who were apart of that and so the matter was covered in the British press, and was also debated on the floor of the House of Commons that Israel had committed an act of piracy against us, and also kidnapping. And we were in international waters. Now the member of Parliament, George Galloway, who had successfully organized the Viva Palestina UK Convoy that arrived in Gaza in March of this year, had also decided that he would do a Fourth of July, you know sort of, spirit of America Viva Palestina USA Convoy, and it would go through Egypt and into Gaza. Well we got into Gaza for 24 hours, but the Humanitarian assistance, much of it did not get into Gaza. And so he invited me. George Galloway invited me to come along with the Viva Palestina USA Convoy. And so I met them in Cairo, where we actually waited. They waited a total of 11 days seeking permission from the Egyptians. And of course you know that it is not just the Egyptians, the Egyptians are huddling with the Israelis, who are also huddling with the Obama administration.

A former Big Brother contestant sent for trial for stealing a policeman's baton at an anti-war demonstration has walked free after the case was dropped.
Carole Vincent, 55, who appeared on the reality TV show in 2007, had denied committing the offence on June 15, 2008.
The case was dropped when the prosecution offered no evidence against her at London's Southwark Crown Court.
Vincent, of Leytonstone, east London, dressed in a black jacket decorated with anti-war badges, said afterwards: "Common sense has prevailed, we have a right to protest. We won't be silenced."
Veteran Labour politician Tony Benn, who was in court as a witness for Vincent, welcomed the decision.
He said: "It would have been a gross injustice if she had been sentenced."
Vincent said she was arrested after picking up a baton dropped by a police officer at the Parliament Square demonstration.
The prosecution had accused her of theft.
Vincent said she was not expecting Monday's result as she had been told there would be a trial that would last about five days.
Mr Benn said he, politician George Galloway and octogenarian campaigner Walter Wolfgang had all been near Vincent when the incident occurred and had offered to make a statement when he heard she had been charged.
WORDPRESS 16 Aug 2009
“Jim Fitzpatrick has lost all credibility. He should resign as a government minister.” So demanded George Galloway this morning as it emerged that Fitzpatrick’s account of events at the Muslim wedding he snubbed omitted some crucial facts.
Galloway continued: “If the account given by the groom in the Telegraph is to be believed, it now emerges that Fitzpatrick’s wife was not told by anyone in authority at the wedding that she should go to the women only section, that Fitzpatrick did not take the issue up with the wedding organisers, and that the family of the groom contacted Fitzpatrick as soon as they became aware of the misunderstanding and invited him and his wife back to the wedding to join an unsegregated table.
“This makes it abundantly clear that Fitzpatrick was simply using this wedding to pursue a political vendetta against the Islamic Forum of Europe, entirely misdirected as it turned out, and to pander to those who have prejudices against Muslims and Muslim traditions.
“Fitzpatrick chose to do this over an event that should have been the happiest day of this young couple’s life, which the families will have spent thousands of pounds organising and which Fitzpatrick was privileged to have been invited to.
“He has been an MP for a constituency with a large Muslim minority long enough and he will have attended enough Muslim weddings in that time to know that these weddings are traditionally segregated for Muslim men and women but that exceptions are almost invariably made for non-Muslim men and women on the basis that offence should not be given to those with different traditions and expectations.
“I note Fitzpatrick now says he will apologise for offending the couple and that he left the wedding discreetly. But this must be a bad joke. He went straight to the press and made a statement about his outrageous treatment at the wedding. This is unacceptable behaviour by a government minister and MP. More than that, this behaviour has discredited him as a representative of this government. If he does not do the decent thing and resign, Brown should sack him.”

STOP PRESS
Councillor Abjol Miah has made the following statement about Fitzpatrick’s comments: “This is a cynical move from a desperate man looking to benefit from prejudice. His constituents deserve to know if this move was approved by Labour Party HQ and if Rushanara Ali, Labour’s candidate for Bethnal Green and Bow, will denounce these divisive comments.”

Jim Fitzpatrick, a Government minister, has publicly condemned the Muslim tradition of separating men and women at weddings.
Muslim leaders insist the custom is traditional at Islamic weddings as well as in mosques, and expressed surprise that Mr Fitzpatrick, a third of whose east London constituents are Muslims, was unaware of the fact.
It was suggested that the Labour MP was trying to appeal to white voters who may fear divided communities.
His comments echo the row triggered three years ago when Jack Straw, now the justice secretary, called Muslim face veils a “visible statement of separation and difference” and called for women to remove them during surgeries in his Blackburn constituency.
Sir Iqbal Sacranie, a founding member of the Muslim Council of Britain, said: “I think in the interest of cohesion it would be better if Mr Fitzpatrick established more contact with the Muslim community.
“It shows a lack of interest on the part of the MP to engage with people with different backgrounds and sadly it reflects badly on him.
“If he had a little bit of knowledge he would have found it was quite normal and nothing unusual for them to enjoy the celebration in this way.
“There are some who prefer segregated events and some where they are joined together. We live in a society where we need to respect all traditions.”
George Galloway, the Respect MP for Bethnal Green and Bow who will contest the new Poplar and Limehouse constituency against Mr Fitzgerald at the election, said: “If he doesn’t wish to attend an Islamic wedding and observe the religious customs preferred by the bride and groom, he should not go rather than insult them for perceived political gain.
“I am absolutely amazed and astonished that a Government minister with a substantial Muslim minority in his constituency should have decided to give such a gratuitous insult to so many Muslims.”
Tim Archer, who will stand for the Conservatives locally, said: “I can’t help but feel he’s playing a certain race card to save his skin at the next election. I think it’s a desperate strategy.”
Ghayasuddin Siddiqui, a director of the Muslim Institute, a leading think tank, added: “He shouldn’t have been surprised, or perhaps he didn’t read the invitation card properly.
“But he’s going to annoy a number of people in his constituency.”
TELEGRAPH Fri, 14 Aug 2009
Jim Fitzpatrick’s actions look foolish and inappropriate. We report today that the Labour member of parliament for a London constituency walked out of a Muslim wedding, complaining that men and women had been segregated. He says that segregation did not used to be the norm, and that a new stricter form of Islam was being imposed on a community that didn’t want it. This was a barrier, he said, to social cohesion and integration.
Well I asked last week for a sensible discussion and policies to aid the integration of immigrants in the European Union. This followed on our report on the fast rise of immigration in Europe and the changing mix of populations. The trouble is that so much of the discussion, when there is one, is not sensible. At worst of course it is extremist and unpalatable.
Barriers to integration are important to discuss, but I find Fitzpatrick’s actions incredible. First, there seems to be some doubt whether rules on segregation have been imposed or were chosen by the bride and groom. Second, segregation of the sexes is common to many ceremonies of many religions. And third, for goodness sake, it was someone’s wedding day. Was Fitzpatrick an invited guest? In which case he seems happy to risk offending the wedding party. There is a time for scoring points, and another for sitting still, maybe even wishing the happy couple well. If he was not an invited guest, then what was he doing there anyway?

BLOGSPOT Sat, 01 Aug 2009
It's been an interesting weekend for The Talking Clock . We've registered our most traffic ever. The reason? Mere mention of the name George Galloway. This blog makes mention of many people in British political life. However, not one politician has ever created as much traffic to this blog as our mention of George Galloway on Thursday evening did. And it's been visitors from all over the world looking at what we have to say about him. This blog does think, on reflection, that British political life needs more people like George Galloway. You can agree with him or disagree with him - and this blog author frequently does. On reflection, much of this blog author's dislike of Galloway stemmed from a momentary hypnotism by the stare of Blair. Like most other Brits, we soon woke up. However, everyone has to surely admit that Galloway says what he thinks. He can not be silenced by anyone, he will not be intimidated by anyone and he stands up for what he believes in. What a refreshing contrast from the political drones and lobby fodder who traipse through the lobbies of Westminster doing whatever their party Whips have told them to do. One thing that is certain is that George Galloway cannot be bullied or pushed around by anyone. He is his own man and has his own mind and passionately stands up for what he believes in. As we say, you can disagree with him - and this blog author frequently does. However, you have to admire a man who - sadly all too rarely in British politics these days - actually does argue passionately from the heart and according to conscience. We note, too, that George Galloway voted in favour of a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty - a referendum that you were denied by the majority of MPs whose identities you will hopefully remember come the General Election.
Love him or hate him, we want more like Galloway. We're sick to the back teeth of tribal party apparatchiks who do what they are told by their party machines - rather than following the wishes of their constituents.
