As world leaders get down to business in London's Excel Centre for the summit, and thousands of protesters take to the streets, we bring you the latest news and analysis from the summit and updates from the protests 8.37am Some new photos of yesterday's action, including a lovely one of that nice blue tank. 8.26am: Vince Cable, everybody's favourite cool head in a storm, this morning told the Today Programme that he expected a lot to come from today's talks, saying there was a need for "substantial agreements to prevent the slide to nationalism and economic protectionism and not just warm words". 8.24am All quiet on the City of London front with no signs as yet of protests on yesterday's scale. Outside the London Stock Exchange at around 7.30 this morning there were around 150 police officers, 50 journalists and about 15 protesters. 8.10am: According to G20 Meltdown in the City, the group were planning to "bang on [leaders'] hotel doors, @ the Excel Centre, Canning town to deliver our message of a world beyond capitalism". Wonder if they left a complimentary paper? 8am: The world leaders are arriving at the ExCeL centre for today's summit. Barack Obama unsurprisingly stole the show by turning up in his helicopter, then transferring to the centre from the helipad in his Obamamobile. There is going to be a deluge of G20-related news and comment in the form of articles, blogs, video, audio and tweets. This blog will update the news as it happens and signpost where you can find out more. The following statement is written by Congressman Paul about the pending financial disaster.
...
Though the world has long suffered from the senselessness of wars that should have been avoided, my greatest fear is that the course on which we find ourselves will bring even greater conflict and economic suffering to the innocent people of the world—unless we quickly change our ways.

The notion that a country can afford “guns and butter” with no significant penalty existed even before the 1960s when it became a popular slogan. It was then, though, we were told the Vietnam War and a massive expansion of the welfare state were not problems. The seventies proved that assumption wrong.

If modern technology had been used to promote the ideas of liberty, free markets, sound money and trade, it would have ushered in a new golden age—a globalism we could accept.

Instead, the wealth and freedom we now enjoy are shrinking and rest upon a fragile philosophic infrastructure. It is not unlike the levies and bridges in our own country that our system of war and welfare has caused us to ignore.

I’m fearful that my concerns have been legitimate and may even be worse than I first thought. They are now at our doorstep. Time is short for making a course correction before this grand experiment in liberty goes into deep hibernation.

There are reasons to believe this coming crisis is different and bigger than the world has ever experienced. Instead of using globalism in a positive fashion, it’s been used to globalize all of the mistakes of the politicians, bureaucrats and central bankers.

MONEYWEEK Fri, 13 Jun 2008

If Americans feel they are being pick-pocketed by inflation, they should take a look overseas.  With the United States pushing its trade deficit and dollars on the rest of the world, many world central banks thought they could grab a “free lunch” by buying US Treasuries to hold the exchange rate of their currencies down, and paying for them by printing up free local currency. This so-called free lunch has turned out to be mighty expensive.

Currently, over 3 billion people are experiencing what it feels like to be robbed by inflation. While free trade and globalisation initially pushed up the standard of living in many developing countries, increases in the demand for basics like food and fuel, fueled by an over-supply of money and credit, have goosed inflation in a big way. So much so, the middle class and poor in many countries are literally being wiped out. Starving, desperate, and angry people are appearing in the headlines daily as they try to bring this dire situation to the attention of their leaders through violent demonstrations and riots.

In Argentina and Vietnam, as one example, panic-stricken residents are swapping their currencies for dollars and Euros. But given the double-digit growth in M3 for the dollar and euro, these inflating currencies may prove to be a dangerous place to hide from inflation. Even for the currencies that are touted as being stable, interest rates are still below the rates of inflation wherever you look.

Unless interest rates are increased materially above the rate of inflation, prices will continue to rise. But with the high level of bad debt in the world banking system, the financial system would not survive the strain of a significant interest rate increase. For a period of time, stagflation will become a new way of life for many of us.

Climate change is the biggest challenge facing the world in the 21st Century. Without urgent action we face a uncertain future where the world’s poor will be hardest hit - but where everyone will suffer.

Both New Labour and the Tories talk about the threat of climate change but the rhetoric is matched only by the depths of their dishonesty. For, in reality, their promotion of free market ‘neo-liberal’ economics is making the problem worse.

Millions make daily, often difficult, choices to reduce their ‘carbon footprint’ only to see the benefit wiped out in seconds as Ford or General Motors launch a new gas-gussler. No wonder many feel helpless.

In this pamphlet Roy Wilkes argues for a different strategy to tackle climate change - one that puts human need not company profits first.

The battle against climate change is not only essential for our survival as a species but, if successful, can re-engage humanity with nature and in doing so lay the foundations of a sustainable future for all.

“A great strength of this pamphlet is that it draws together the great issues of corporate globalisation, war and environmental devastation. This isn’t a whimper aimed at a comfortable middle class in the west, asking them to spare a shilling and the odd energy efficient light bulb for the planet.

“It is an urgent call to arms to save our planet, its scope is the people of our planet and it deserves a wide audience.”

George Galloway MP

Statement from Curacao community fighting to stop serious toxic health crisis:

Humane Care Foundation is an organization that strives to uphold the human rights of the people on the Caribbean island of Curaçao.

The Island of Curaçao is located in the southwestern Caribbean, with a population of approximately 134.000 inhabitants. It is the largest island of the Netherlands Antilles, 38 miles long, approximately 2 to 7.5 miles wide and 444 square kilometers (182 square miles). It is located just 35 miles north of the coast of Venezuela, 42 miles east of the island Aruba and 2.5 hours by air from Miami.

Willemstad is the densely populated capital of the Island of Curaçao and in its hearth lays the Schottegat area and the biggest and eldest refinery of the Western Hemisphere, build in 1914 and declared obsolete in 1982 and 1983.

Yet, Refineria ISLA (Curazao) S.A., subsidiary of Petroleos de Venezuela S.A. continues to operate the refinery, after Royal Dutch Shell exhibited undue influence imposing the sale of the refinery (1985) to the local government for 1 US $ in exchange for full indemnity for all damage inflicted during 70 years of operation. The local government was forced to take the deal in order to save thousands of jobs. However, the sale could not prevent the economy of Curaçao slip into a structural economic crisis.

Whereas the refinery was of vital importance during the Shell-age, this importance has diminished to a minimum after 1985 and is currently negligent. PdVSA operates the refinery as a cost center, with a minimum of local personnel, has not conducted the proper maintenance investments, and exceeds international pollution norms on a daily basis. As a result the human rights of more then 12,5 % of the people of Curaçao are being violated on a daily basis.

The conclusions of the latest Environmental Study downwind of Schottegat and the latest public health study published by the government agencies of Curaçao. Please note that cancer and other chronic pulmonary disorders are considered to be "chest discomfort":

More then 12,5 % of our total population is being threatened of which more then 5.500 children living in the high-risk area and more then 3.000 children that have to go to school in the same contaminated area. To give you somewhat more insight of the profoundness of the existing crises that this is caused on the island of Curaçao:

One of the more then 5.500 children that have become victims of irrepairable health damage inflicted by toxic pollution
