Iran and Syria have long been allies, yet as if Khameni realises Assad's situation is not salvageable, he will abandon him
For President Bashar al-Assad, the situation in Syria is becoming worse every day. In the middle of the biggest crisis his regime has faced, he has had one friend on whom he could rely: Iran's supreme leader, Ali Khamenei.
Khamenei has been Assad's steadfast friend, providing him with political as well as material support. But as Assad's position worsens, he will need to rely on Khamenei's regime more, especially since an increasing number of Assad's neighbours are turning against him.
First was Turkey, which used to be a close ally. Now, the Turkish government is putting pressure on Assad and warning him to stop killing demonstrators and to implement reforms as soon as possible. And then the Saudis joined in by telling Assad to stop "his killing machine" and withdrawing their ambassador. A number of other Gulf states followed suit.

William Hague announces travel restrictions on people involved with Iran's nuclear programme or human rights violations
Britain, the US and Canada have approved a new round of travel restrictions targeting the Iranian regime, including members of the judiciary and prison officials.
The British foreign secretary, William Hague, said on Friday that the punitive measures were aimed at individuals associated with Iran's nuclear programme as well as those involved in the violation of human rights in the country.
"The UK is working closely with its partners to prevent a wide range of individuals connected with Iran's nuclear enrichment and weaponisation programmes from entering our countries. These include scientists, engineers and those procuring components," Hague said in a statement.

As Iran conducts 10 days of war games, commander says it has no plans to make longer-range missiles despite having the ability
A senior Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander has claimed his country can produce even longer range missiles than those already in its arsenal, but will not because Israel and US bases in the Gulf are already within its reach.
Amir Ali Hajizadeh, commander of the Guard's aerospace force, made the remarks as Iran conducts 10 days of war games, its latest show of military force amid a standoff with the west over the country's nuclear programme.
Hajizadeh said the Guard's arsenal already included missiles with a range of about 1,250 miles (2,000km) – putting Israel, US bases in the Gulf and parts of south-eastern and eastern Europe within Iran's reach.
The missiles, he said, were designed for Israeli and US targets. Iran's known missiles of such range are the Shahab-3 and the Sajjil. Iran considers Israel and the US its main enemies.

Al-Jazeera English journalist Dorothy Parvaz has been disappeared. Authorities in both Syria and Iran now deny that she is being held in their countries.
It is known that Parvaz, pictured here, flew from Doha to Damascus on assignment for the network, landing on 29 April. Then she vanished.
Some days later, the Syrian embassy in Washington announced that she had been deported on 1 May to Iran (see here). Parvaz holds Iranian, US and Canadian nationality.
But on 14 May, the Iranian foreign minister, Ali Akbar Salehi, told his country's news agency, IRNA, that Iran had "no information" about Parvaz.
According to the Syrian embassy statement, Parvaz tried to enter Syria with an expired Iranian passport and a tourist visa.
After finding transmitting equipment in her bags, the Damascus authorities assumed she had come to cover the anti-government demonstrations and then deported her to Iran.

Many countries still executing people for crimes and hundreds remain on death row, Amnesty International report reveals
China, Iran, North Korea, Yemen and the US carried out the most executions last year, bucking a global trends towards abolition of the death penalty, a report has said .
China again was by far the world's most prolific executioner in putting to death thousands, said Amnesty International in its report on the death penalty worldwide. Amnesty does not provide a precise figure of executions in China as Beijing keeps such figures secret.
Instead, it has challenged the Chinese authorities to publish figures for the number of people sentenced to death and executed each year to confirm claims of a reduction in the use of the death penalty.
China, however, last year did move to cut down the number of offences that carry the death penalty, which applies to no less than 68 crimes. If the changes go through, the death penalty would be removed for such crimes as tax.......

Two Iranian naval ships have entered the Suez canal and are heading towards the Mediterranean sea, a canal official said.
The move is certain to anger Israel.
"They entered the canal at 5.45am (3.45am GMT)," the official told Reuters. No other details were available.
The Suez canal cuts through Egypt and allows shipping to pass from the Middle East to Europe and vice versa without circumnavigating the southern tip of Africa.
The canal's northern mouth, Port Said, is about 60 miles from Israel, but the ships' route to Syria, their intended destination, would take them parallel to the Israeli coast. The vessels are a frigate and a supply ship.
The Israeli prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, has said he would take a "grave view" of the passage of the ships, the first Iranian naval vessels to go through the canal since Iran's 1979 Islamic........

TEHRAN: Iran will soon free Sarah Shourd, one of three US hikers the Islamic republic detained more than a year ago, an Iranian diplomat announced on Thursday.
“I would like to confirm that Iran will be releasing Sarah Shourd very soon,” Bak Sahraei, the second counsellor to the Iranian mission at the United Nations, said in a statement sent to AFP.
Previously, Iran's Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance said “one of the Americans” would be freed at 9:00 am (0430 GMT) on Saturday at Hotel Esteghlal in Tehran, without identifying the detainee.
A ministry official said the release ceremony would be overseen by one of the vice presidents of Iran, but the statements did not elaborate about the reasons for the decision.
Shourd, 31, was arrested along with fellow US hikers Shane Bauer, 27, and Josh Fattal, 27 on July 31, 2009 after straying across the border from neighbouring Iraq.
Her mother Nora told AFP last month that Sarah was being held in solitary confinement........

TEHRAN: Three people, including two children, have been killed and 40 others injured in an earthquake which struck Iran’s biggest desert, Dasht-e Kavir, state television reported on Saturday.
The 5.9 magnitude quake struck on Friday south of the northern city of Damghan.
In a separate report, the state television website quoted secretary general of Iran Red Crescent, Zaher Rostani, as saying that an elderly woman was also among those killed in the quake.
The website said six villages near Damghan were damaged in the quake which was about 278 kilometres east of Tehran.
The tremor, which struck at 11:53 pm local time Friday, was also felt in the capital Tehran.
Iran sits astride several major fault lines in the Earth’s crust, and is prone to frequent earthquakes, many of which have been devastating.
The worst in recent times was a 6.3 magnitude quake which hit the southern city of Bam in December 2003, killing 31,000 people, about a quarter of its population, and destroying the city’s ancient mud-built citadel. —AFP
