It was the day that changed the world for ever. Or did it? Ten years on, two leading commentators, Jason Burke and Francis Fukuyama, offer an analysis of its long-term impact, and how terrorism worksFrancis Fukuyama: The legacy of that terrible time will be less significant than we then feared
In the immediate aftermath of the September 11 attacks, there were grand assertions that "everything was different" and that the "world had changed." We were forced to confront a bearded man in a cave spouting incomprehensible invective about crusaders and jihad, and reorient foreign policy in dramatic ways. But with 10 years' hindsight, did the world actually change on that date? And what will Osama bin Laden's historical legacy be?
The answer to both questions is: not much. It is my view that in a longer historical perspective, al-Qaida will be seen as a mere blip or diversion. Bin Laden got lucky that day and pulled off a devastating, made-for-media attack. The United States then........

Ten years after the attacks on New York and Washington, we asked six writers to look back at a decade of change and conflict. What can fiction tell us about 9/11?
How do you mark an anniversary like 9/11? How do you examine what has changed and what has not in the 10 years since destruction was visited on New York and Washington out of a clear, blue sky? How do you reflect on the lives lost and the lies told in the course of what Pankaj Mishra calls our "low, dishonest decade"?
Over the last 10 years, this newspaper has charted the shock, the reverberations and the legacy of those events, but the effect on our imagination – on how we perceive the world – is perhaps as important to determine. Here on the books desk, we felt an attempt should be made through fiction.
When we started commissioning these stories we didn't ask for stories about the day itself – in the years since, we've already heard quite a bit from New York. This time, 10 years on, we wanted to trace the ripples...

Iraqi officials say Khalid al-Fahdawi, a Sunni member of the Iraqi parliament, was among those confirmed dead
A suicide bomber blew himself up inside Baghdad's largest Sunni mosque last night, killing 29 people during prayers, in a strike on a place of worship similar to the one that brought Iraq to the brink of civil war five years ago.
Iraqi security officials said Iraqi parliament member Khalid al-Fahdawi, a Sunni, was among the dead in the attack.
Major General Qassim al-Moussawi, a spokesman for Baghdad's military operations command, confirmed the bombing happened inside the Um al-Qura mosque during prayers in the western Baghdad neighbourhood of al-Jamiah. The blue-domed building is the largest Sunni mosque in Baghdad.
"I heard something like a very severe wind storm, with smoke and darkness, and shots by the guards," said eyewitness Mohammad Mustafa.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for Sunday's bombing, but suicide attacks generally are a hallmark of........

Blasts in city south-east of Baghdad wound at least 60 people
Two explosions have hit a crowded market in a city south-east of Baghdad, killing 34 people.
The blasts in Kut, 100 miles from Baghdad, went off as construction workers were gathered in a market selling generators and other appliances.
A police spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Dhurgam Muhammad Hassan, said the first bomb went off in a freezer. Then, as rescuers and onlookers gathered round, a car bomb exploded.
According to the region's top medical official, Diaa al-Aboudi, 34 people died in the explosion. Hassan put the number of the wounded from the blasts at 60.
The Kut explosions were the first major act of violence since Iraq's political leaders earlier this month announced that they would begin negotiations with the US over whether to keep a small number of American forces in the country past 31 December.
All US forces are to leave the country by the end of this year but both Iraqi and US officials have........

Thirty-three years after defeat, Diana Nyad is back to swim from Cuba to Florida. Her example helps us face our disappointments
I thought I'd never fall for a hope-peddler again, but I am rooting for Diana Nyad.
The world record-holding distance swimmer dove into the waters off Cuba at dusk on Sunday night. Her destination: Florida. One hundred and three miles, at least 60 hours and a shark-infested ocean away. Nyad turns 62 in a few weeks.
"It's not about sports; it's about hope," she's said. It's also about conquering her own demons. In 1978, at age 28, she tried the Havana to Key West swim for the first time, and her doctors pulled her out of the water after 42 hours and about 76 miles. High winds were buffeting her off course.
This time, the water's calm, the weather's temperate. Eighteen hours on, CNN's Matt Sloane reported that Nyad was fine, except for a bit of "shoulder pain and a touch of asthma". Dang!
It's what Nyad calls her "extreme dream", and, as I said, I'm..

Ten years on from the 9/11 attacks, the project to rebuild New York's World Trade Centre site is still riven by political and professional infighting
This 11 September, exactly 10 years after the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre fell, politicians and relatives of the victims will gather in a grove of 415 trees planted on the event's charged ground. Two huge cascades of water, each occupying the square footprint of one of towers, will start churning, ceaselessly, forever. Inscribed in a bronze strip surrounding the cascades will be the names of those killed in the 9/11 attacks, including those at the Pentagon and on United flight 93, which crashed in a field in Pennsylvania, as this is the national 9/11 memorial, not just New York's.
The memorial will be ready, just, although it will be accessible only by advance booking for another two years. It could not miss this deadline. Despite billions of public dollars, thousands of ideas for memorials and rebuilding, a shared public..

The true stories of journalists who faced intimidation and hardship to do their jobs are to get an airing on stage from tomorrow.
A play called On The Record tells the stories of six independent journalists who tried to tell the truth in threatening conditions.
Combining verbatim testimony with dramatic reconstruction, the play features the work of brothers Lal and Lasantha Wickramatunga in Sri Lanka, Lydia Cacho in Mexico, Elena Kostyuchenko in Russia, Amira Hass in occupied Palestine and Zoriah Miller who faced down US military censorship over his Iraq war images.
On the Record, which runs from tomorrow until 13 August at London's Arcola Theatre, is produced by the UK-based Ice and Fire theatre company, which explores human rights stories through performance.
The company's artistic director, Christine Bacon, co-wrote the play with Noah Birksted-Breen - both of whom feature in the video clip above.
Linked to the play, there are also a series of panel discussions about.......

Fifteen US troops killed in June, the highest toll in two years, with latest strike blamed on Iranian-backed militia
A rocket attack on a US base near Iraq's border with Iran has killed three American soldiers, according to an official who blamed the strike on a Shia militia linked to Tehran.
The deaths came at the end of the bloodiest month for US troops in Iraq in two years, and with six months before the American military is scheduled to leave after more than eight years of war.
Wednesday's rocket attack struck a US base in southern Iraq that is located a few miles from Iran, the official said, saying the Iranian link was evident from the type of rockets used.
American intelligence officials believe the Iranian-backed Kataib Hezbollah, or Hezbollah Brigades, is one of the only militias to use weapons known in military jargon as Irams, or improvised rocket-assisted mortars, against US troops. They are made in Iran.
Kataib Hezbollah has links to the Lebanon-based Hezbollah....

Iraqi forces storm Camp Ashraf, home to 3,500 Iranian exiles, as supporters call on US and UN to intervene
Iraqi forces have stormed a camp of Iranian dissidents in north-eastern Iraq amid warnings that the US government may have broken international law by failing to protect the camp.
An Iraqi general, Ali Ghaidan, confirmed that an operation took place in the early morning at Camp Ashraf, home to 3,500 Iranian exiles, all members of the Mojahedin-e-Khalq (MEK) militia. He said no one was killed, but representatives of the group in London said 23 people died, including six women.
A hospital official in Baquba, capital of the Diyala province, reported three deaths and 13 wounded. The figures could not be confirmed as access to the camp, whose residents have "protected persons" status under the Geneva convention, is restricted.
Ghaidan said troops were responding to exiles who had been throwing stones and throwing themselves in front of soldiers' trucks over the past several.....

Driven by Tea Party fervour, the Republican party is demanding deep budget cuts – but a government shutdown carries big risks
Months, even weeks, ago it might have been seen as inconceivable. But now, politicians on both sides of the aisle are bracing themselves for the perfect political storm: a showdown over government shutdown. That's right: in a mere matter of weeks, we may be looking at another government shutdown along the lines of 1995, when President Clinton and the Republican-controlled Congress feuded over funding for critical government programmes.
The government's current spending authorisation ends on the 4 March and reauthorisation must be granted to avoid a complete shutdown of government, government services and the employment of civil servants. Congress can pass a temporary funding resolution to keep the government operating – something that happened habitually under President Bush, whose demands to fund the Iraq war were frequent. But this time, Republicans......

Lady Eliza Manningham-Buller tells Chilcot that invasion increased terrorist threat and radicalised young British Muslims
The former head of MI5 delivered a devastating critique of the invasion of Iraq today, saying it substantially increased the threat of terrorist attacks in Britain and was a significant factor behind the radicalisation of young Muslims in the UK.
Lady Eliza Manningham-Buller told the Chilcot inquiry into the UK's role in Iraq: "Our involvement in Iraq radicalised, for want of a better word, a whole generation of young people – not a whole generation, a few among a generation – who saw our involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan as being an attack upon Islam."
Asked by Sir Roderic Lyne, a member of the inquiry, to what extent the conflict exacerbated the threat from international terrorism facing Britain, she replied: "Substantially."
She was not surprised, she said, that UK citizens were behind the 7/7 attacks in London nor that increasing number of Britons......
