‘TO CUT down on gang-related crimes, policies could be put in place to curb the African-American population growth in places like Harlem and Compton. The government could consider cutting off welfare benefits for families in these urban areas to discourage births of blacks and cut down the supply of ‘superfluous young men’ who have nothing else to do in their lives but be preyed on by criminal gang leaders who give them a sense of belonging. Ultimately these policies are an effective way to limit gang related crimes.’’

The absurdity and lack of logic in the above fictitious paragraph is overshadowed only by its offensive nature. Few would welcome such a view in 2010, but this kind of argument was made recently to an audience that received it with applause instead of disgust.

Martin Kramer, a fellow at Harvard University’s Weatherhead Center for International Affairs, made this argument at a conference in Israel last month. The only difference was that the population he sought to limit was Palestinians in Gaza to prevent “economically superfluous young men’’ from joining radical groups. He said that “if society cannot offer dignified pursuits for the fourth and fifth and sixth sons, then someone else will.’’

He also supported lowering the fertility rate for Palestinians in Gaza and argued that this “will happen faster if the West stops providing pro-natal subsidies for Palestinians with refugee status.’’

Society? In Kramer’s version of reality, it is Palestinian society that cannot offer dignified pursuits for their children. He seems to think Gaza exists in a vacuum. He seems to be ignorant of the events and actors that have created the current situation.

The children of Gaza are not “economically superfluous’’ because they were born into large families. Their inability to be productive members of society is not the fault of society itself, but the fault of the occupying and devastating force of the state of Israel. The occupation of Gaza and the subsequent siege and attacks by Israel have destroyed lives, industry and infrastructure. With the percentage of the population relying directly on food aid increasing from 60 percent to 80 percent in the past three years and unemployment at an all-time high, it is obvious that the children of Gaza are “superfluous’’ not simply because they are born, but because of what they are born into: a hell in a prison controlled from the outside by Israel.

George Galloway has written to Labour's General Secretary Ray Collins, MP Jim Fitzpatrick and Labour candidate Rushanara Ali, demanding Tower Hamlets Labour Party election agent and council candidate Graham Taylor should be sacked and disciplinary action taken against him and other members. This follows Islamophobic and racist comments appearing on Taylor's Facebook.

Taylor attended a meeting on election arrangements at Tower Hamlets Town Hall with the chief executive Kevan Collins, chief legal officer Isabella Freeman and chief elections officer Louise Stamp, on Monday evening.

Before going to the meeting he put out the following message on his Facebook group - "Graham Taylor is off to that centre of Islamic fundamentalism - Tower Hamlets Town Hall". A number of his Facebook friends then responded, including former councillor and Labour's council candidate for Stepney ward Judith Gardner. Gardner wrote "Give em hell!". Another friend wrote the disgusting racist comment: "Bring some pork scratchings" and another "Pork!".

"This is a disgraceful example of the Islamophobia and racism now infecting parts of Tower Hamlets Labour Party," said an outraged George Galloway. "The comments were made just before the Dispatches programme on Monday, which a number of Labour members co-operated with and in some cases inspired. These comments should have no place anywhere, never mind in a party claiming its commitment to opposing racism and respect for people of faith.

"I am demanding that Taylor is sacked as Rushanara Ali's election agent and his nomination for council candidate withdrawn. He is clearly not a fit and proper person to hold office in the Labour Party. And former councillor Judith Gardner should also be stood down. I don't know if the other contributors are Labour Party members but, if they are, they also should be subject to action by the Labour Party, up to and including their expulsion."

Passages removed from judgment on involvement of MI5 in torture of Binyam Mohamed must be restored, court of appeal rules Devastating passages criticising MI5 that were removed from the ruling on the involvement of the security service in the torture of Binyam Mohamed must be restored to the judgment, the court of appeal ruled today. The decision is another blow to the government after it lost its attempt earlier this month to cover up MI5's complicity in "cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment" meted out to the British resident Mohamed by the US. The passages that will now be restored appeared in the original draft judgment but were removed after Jonathan Sumption QC, the government's counsel, claimed the words suggested that MI5's approach undermined assurances given by ministers and that MI5 had "an interest in suppressing information". Sumption added that the observations of Lord Neuberger, the master of the rolls, in the judgment constituted "exceptionally damaging criticism of the good faith of the security service as a whole" that was not based on evidence heard in court. Neuberger agreed to Sumption's request without other parties in the case having any opportunity to oppose it. Lawyers for Mohamed, media groups led by the Guardian, and civil rights groups Liberty, Justice and Index on Censorship, strongly objected. They argued that it was a response to a wholly unwarranted and dangerous interference in the courts. The judgment in the Mohamed case saw the foreign secretary, David Miliband, defeated in his long battle to prevent publication of a seven-paragraph summary of 42 CIA documents – which are still suppressed – describing the treatment Mohamed received with the knowledge of MI5 officers. Imagine for a moment what the reaction would be if ­Iranian ­intelligence was almost ­unversally believed to have assassinated a leader of one of the organisations fighting the Tehran government in a western-friendly state. Then consider how Britain, let alone the US, might respond if the killers had carried out the ­operation ­using forged or stolen passports of ­citizens of four European states, including Britain, with dual Iranian nationality.

You can be sure it would have ­triggered a major international storm, stentorian declarations about the threat of state-sponsored terrorism, and ­perhaps a debate at the UN ­security council, with demands for harsher ­sanctions against an increasingly ­dangerous Islamic republic.

Substitute Israel for Iran, and the first part of that scenario is exactly what happened in Dubai last month.

It is not the first British-Israeli row over the misuse of British passports. British officials are particularly angry because the Israeli government pledged that there would be no repeat of an incident in 1987, in which Mossad agents acquired and tampered with British passports.

British passports are the property of the British government. When that government says and does nothing for six days after it was given evidence that Mossad agents stole the identity of six British citizens to assassinate a Hamas commander in Dubai, it starts to seem as if Israel was right to think it could get away with it.

It's a propaganda war. Whoever killed the Hamas official in Dubai – let's speak frankly – it's part of an old, dirty war between the Israelis and the Palestinians in which they have been murdering their secret police antagonists for decades. Whose were the passports? Or should we say "passports". So here's a moment to reflect on realities.

According to a Dubai "source" of The Independent – readers will have to judge what this means – the security forces of the aforesaid emirate informed a "British diplomat" in Dubai (presumably the consul, since the embassy is in the capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi) of the UK passport details almost six days ago and "did not receive an appropriate reply". If this is true – the Foreign Office will be wrathful in its denials – then why didn't the British immediately express their outrage at the use of forged British passports and cough up details of the equally outrageous frauds a week ago? This misuse puts every British citizen at risk.

Yet the Foreign Office – so keen to warn British citizens of the dangers they face in the Middle East – sat on their large behind and did bugger all. I'm sorry. If they had the details, they had a duty to UK citizens to speak up. If they hadn't got the details, they should have told us. But they were silent. Why? Was there a cold breeze coming beneath a closed door?
Hamas assassination: Israeli ambassador must answer questions over fake passports

Israel's ambassador should be summoned to the Foreign Office to answer allegations of his country's involvement in the assassination of a Hamas commander by a hit squad using fake British and European passports, a senior MP demanded today.

Former Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell, who is also a member of the Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, said the Government should demand an urgent explanation.

''If the Israeli government was party to behaviour of this kind it would be a serious violation of trust between nations,'' he said.

''If legitimate British passport holders were put at risk it would be a disgrace.

''Given the current speculation, the Israeli government has some explaining to do and the ambassador should be summoned to the Foreign Office to do so in double-quick time.''

His call came after Tory MP Hugo Swire, chairman of the Conservative Middle East Council, demanded a ''full investigation''.

Passports belonging to the alleged killers of a top Hamas official in Dubai are probably fakes, the British and Irish governments have said.

One man with the same name as a British suspect said it was not him.

Melvyn Adam Mildiner, a British man living in Israel, told Reuters news agency: "I am obviously angry, upset and scared - any number of things. And I'm looking into what I can do to try to sort things out and clear my name.

"I don't know how this happened or who chose my name or why, but hopefully we'll find out soon."

He added that he had his passport with him.

One way of falsifying a nationality is to forge a passport or insert a new identity and picture into a stolen passport.

But a more effective way can be to steal a real person's identity and get a real passport in their name.

That looks to have been the tactic used by the team involved in the Dubai assassination.

This requires a level of sophistication suggesting an experienced intelligence organisation.

That fact will do nothing to quell the suspicion that Israel's Mossad was involved, particularly since it has used foreign passports for previous operations including the 1997 attempt on the life of Khaled Meshal in Jordan, when two operatives used Canadian passports.

Evidence over "paragraph 168" shows that security services did know of deliberate US strategy of sleep deprivation, rendition threats and shackling. One of the gravest revelations so far made about the missing "paragraph 168" of this week's appeal court judgment in the Binyam Mohamed case is that parliament's intelligence and security committee (ISC) was misled by MI5. Government lawyer Jonathan Sumption QC, in a letter demanding the deletion of paragraph 168, confirmed this, pointing out that the judgment stated: "Officials of the service deliberately misled the ISC." He was referring to evidence given to a secret session of the ISC on 23 November 2006 by the then head of MI5, Eliza Manningham-Buller. She was testifying about events in May 2002 that took place under her predecessor, Stephen Lander. According to the ISC's later heavily redacted report, Manningham-Buller and her team denied all knowledge of Mohamed's ill-treatment. The committee – chaired by the former Northern Ireland secretary Paul Murphy – was told: "A member of the security service did interview [Mohamed] once for a period of approximately three hours while he was detained in Karachi in 2002." The interrogator, later known as Witness B, was "an experienced officer" who conducted the interview "in line with the services' guidance to staff on contact with detainees". The ISC recorded: "The security service denies that the officer told [Mohamed] he would be tortured as he alleges … He did not observe any abuse and … no instances of abuse were mentioned by [Mohamed]." Murphy's committee duly reassured the public that although MI5 conceded they had not demanded specific assurances from the US that Mohamed was being properly treated: "This is understandable given the lack of knowledge at the time of any possible consequences of US custody of detainees." That part of the published ISC report now appears to have been untrue. The judges found that MI5 had 42 documents, detailing how both Witness B and "persons senior to Witness B" had been briefed in detail at the time about how the US was deliberately ill-treating Mohamed as part of a "new strategy", systematically depriving him of sleep, terrifying him with threats of rendition and shackling him in interrogations.

Six British men and a blonde Irish woman are among an alleged hit squad wanted in Dubai for the assassination of a Hamas commander in his luxury hotel room.

Gail Folliard is said to be part of an 11-strong gang  -  some wearing fake beards and wigs  -  who disguised themselves with tennis clothes and rackets in a highly orchestrated murder.

They arrived on separate flights and spent less than a day in the emirate, tracking their victim to his five-star residence, the al-Bustan Rotana, near the airport before ambushing and suffocating him.
