Hezbollah has foiled a US-planned coup to seize control of Lebanon during tensions sparked by controversial gov't decisions, a report says.

"The Americans launched a pre-emptive strike against opposition nationalist forces, starting with the (Hezbollah) resistance, and attempted a Washington-planned coup but were taken aback by the opposition, which restored order in Lebanon," Syrian daily Al-Baath reported on Sunday.

The Lebanese opposition aimed to "remove foreign interference and stop the plots to transform Lebanon... into an Israeli protectorate and new focal point of US links in the region," the paper added.

Tensions mounted among the feuding Lebanese parties and their supporters after the pro-US ruling coalition decided to ban Hezbollah telecommunications network and sack Beirut Airport Security Chief on Tuesday.

Thousands of British Muslim and Palestinian solidarity groups marched today on the street of London, on the 60'th of anniversary of the creation of the state Israel, calling for an end of the blockade of Gaza, for the right of return of refugees and for the end of the occupation of Palestine. The organisers put estimate number of participants at 15.000. Amongst the speakers addressing the rally, at end of the of the demonstration in Trafalgar Square was the Palestinian politician Moustafa Bargouti, the Respect MP George Galloway, and the veteran British politician Tony Benn.

Thousands demand justice for Palestine in London demonstration

Thousands attended a rally in London to mark the 60th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba and call for an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land on Saturday.

The Secretary General of the Palestinian National Initiative, Dr Mustafa Barghouthi, spoke at the rally, which called for the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes in historic Palestine.

"Israeli citizens make 30 times what Palestinians do, settlers take 48 times the water of Palestinians, Palestinians are denied entry to Jerusalem," Barghouthi said.

Respect MP George Galloway spoke about Britain's historic responsibility for the tragedy inflicted on the Palestinian people, from the time of the Balfour Declaration onwards, and remembered the "thousands upon thousands of martyrs" created over decades; he also demanded the release of Marwan Barghouti and other political prisoners, and declared: "If there is no justice in Palestine there can be no peace in Palestine, and peace in Palestine is the key to peace throughout the Middle East."

Everyone but Sen. Clinton knows it is over. Everyone is busy with post-game analysis of why she lost. But the reason is so obvious that it is staring us in the face. Even the best analysis, from Karen Tumulty, does not mention it, perhaps because it is too obvious.

Yet 23 Senate Democrats voted against the war ( HT to GN1927 for correction.See comment below for complete list.) And a majority of House Democrats. Also a Republican, Lincoln Chaffee. We must admire these honorable men and women who stood up when the nation needed them.

Fake mavericks like McCain rolled over and played nice. Sen. Clinton fully expected the Primary for Democratic nomination in 2008 to be a coronation: the real attacks would come from Republicans in the General Elections. So she was looking to the right and not the left as she made her decision. She made a crucial decision risking the lives of thousands of soldiers based on a mere political calculation.
