Polls in France, UK and Germany show the majority of people back recognition of a Palestinian state by the UN
The majority of people in the UK, France and Germany want their governments to vote in favour of recognising a Palestinian state if a resolution is brought before the United Nations in the next few weeks, according to an opinion poll.
The three European countries are seen as crucial votes in the battle over the Palestinians' bid for statehood at the UN, which meets next week. All three are pressing for a return to peace negotiations as an alternative to pursuing the statehood strategy, but they have not declared their intentions if it comes to a UN vote.
In the UK, 59% of those polled said the government should vote in favour of a UN resolution recognising a Palestinian state alongside Israel. In France and Germany, the figures were 69% and 71% respectively. Support for the Palestinians' right to have their own state, without reference to the UN vote, was even higher:....

It was the day that changed the world for ever. Or did it? Ten years on, two leading commentators, Jason Burke and Francis Fukuyama, offer an analysis of its long-term impact, and how terrorism worksFrancis Fukuyama: The legacy of that terrible time will be less significant than we then feared
In the immediate aftermath of the September 11 attacks, there were grand assertions that "everything was different" and that the "world had changed." We were forced to confront a bearded man in a cave spouting incomprehensible invective about crusaders and jihad, and reorient foreign policy in dramatic ways. But with 10 years' hindsight, did the world actually change on that date? And what will Osama bin Laden's historical legacy be?
The answer to both questions is: not much. It is my view that in a longer historical perspective, al-Qaida will be seen as a mere blip or diversion. Bin Laden got lucky that day and pulled off a devastating, made-for-media attack. The United States then........

Ewen MacAskill, the Guardian's diplomatic editor in September 2001, describes how the paper covered the 9/11 attacks
The editor of the Guardian, Alan Rusbridger, does not normally oversee the news operation directly, having a loftier role in charge of all departments. But he was, coincidentally, sitting at the head of the newsdesk on 9/11.
He decided the magnitude of the event dictated something different. For the first time in the paper's history, he gave the entire first three pages over to photographs. The Guardian was still a broadsheet then, and the effect was dramatic.
The words began on page four. It was lunchtime in Britain when the attacks took place and many staff were not in the office (we were of course, updating our website as events unfolded). On their return, they quickly caught up and, as the deadline approached, the editor had a huge array of pieces to choose from.
As well as reporting from Ground Zero that is still moving to read today, there was a wide range..

Ten years after the attacks on New York and Washington, we asked six writers to look back at a decade of change and conflict. What can fiction tell us about 9/11?
How do you mark an anniversary like 9/11? How do you examine what has changed and what has not in the 10 years since destruction was visited on New York and Washington out of a clear, blue sky? How do you reflect on the lives lost and the lies told in the course of what Pankaj Mishra calls our "low, dishonest decade"?
Over the last 10 years, this newspaper has charted the shock, the reverberations and the legacy of those events, but the effect on our imagination – on how we perceive the world – is perhaps as important to determine. Here on the books desk, we felt an attempt should be made through fiction.
When we started commissioning these stories we didn't ask for stories about the day itself – in the years since, we've already heard quite a bit from New York. This time, 10 years on, we wanted to trace the ripples...

Iraqi officials say Khalid al-Fahdawi, a Sunni member of the Iraqi parliament, was among those confirmed dead
A suicide bomber blew himself up inside Baghdad's largest Sunni mosque last night, killing 29 people during prayers, in a strike on a place of worship similar to the one that brought Iraq to the brink of civil war five years ago.
Iraqi security officials said Iraqi parliament member Khalid al-Fahdawi, a Sunni, was among the dead in the attack.
Major General Qassim al-Moussawi, a spokesman for Baghdad's military operations command, confirmed the bombing happened inside the Um al-Qura mosque during prayers in the western Baghdad neighbourhood of al-Jamiah. The blue-domed building is the largest Sunni mosque in Baghdad.
"I heard something like a very severe wind storm, with smoke and darkness, and shots by the guards," said eyewitness Mohammad Mustafa.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for Sunday's bombing, but suicide attacks generally are a hallmark of........

Ferzat, who had become increasingly critical of Bashar al-Assad's regime, found bleeding at side of Damascus road
Syrian security forces have beaten up a prominent Syrian political cartoonist and left him bleeding on the side of a road, in the latest episode of a campaign to quash dissent against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
Ali Ferzat, 60, is one of Syria's most famous cultural figures, and his drawings and cartoons have pushed at the boundaries of freedom of expression in Syria.
Working from a gallery in central Damascus, Ferzat has long criticised the bureaucracy and corruption of the regime and since March has turned to depicting the uprising.
In the early hours of Thursday, masked men seized Ferzat on a Damascus street and beat him up before dumping him, bleeding, on the capital's Airport Road where he was found by passersby, activists said.
Ferzat had become increasingly critical of the regime and its brutal crackdown. He recently appeared on al-Arabiya.......

Splits remain in opposition fragmented by sectarian and ideological tensions, with no clear next steps beyond demands for more freedom
Syria's fragmented opposition took steps towards forming a national council on Tuesday, but serious divisions and mistrust among the members prevented them from presenting a unified front against president Bashar al-Assad's regime more than five months into the country's uprising, participants said.
The opposition, fragmented by years of sectarian and ideological tensions, has made unprecedented gains against the regime, but there is no clear leadership or platform beyond the demands for more freedom and for Assad to step down.
With Assad's forces cracking down on the protests, the overall death toll has reached 2,200, the United Nations said this week.
Opposition members have been meeting in neighbouring Turkey in recent days, but there were conflicting reports about exactly what emerged. Obeida al-Nahhas told the Associated Press that a........

Be it medieval bones or rubble from the Twin Towers, relics affirm our belief in human endurance
Nothing divides a secularist or a Protestant from a Catholic quite as much as relics. Can there be anything more creepy than a skeleton enclosed in a glass case beneath a Sicilian side altar? And yet the bones of departed saints once did the job of connecting past with present. Locked in a reliquary but often paraded in public processions, the cranium, tibia and fibula helped to turn the narrative of dry theology into a gripping soap opera.
The clever and beautiful Catherine of Alexandria, for instance, was condemned to die in around the year 305 by being broken on the wheel, a favoured Roman instrument of torture, after rejecting the advances of the emperor Maximinus II. But in martyrology, inanimate objects can conspire to frustrate the wicked. The wooden wheel collapsed, and the more reliable axe had to be used for Catherine's execution.
A millennium later the pilgrimage route to..

• Assad, has told the UN secretary-general, Ban Ki-moon, that military and police operations against pro-democracy protesters have stopped, according to the United Nations. In a telephone call with Assad on Wednesday, Ban "expressed alarm at the latest reports of continued widespread violations of human rights and excessive use of force by Syrian security forces against civilians across Syria, including in the Al Ramel district of Latakia, home to several thousands of Palestinian refugees", the UN said in a statement. Blasts in city south-east of Baghdad wound at least 60 people
Two explosions have hit a crowded market in a city south-east of Baghdad, killing 34 people.
The blasts in Kut, 100 miles from Baghdad, went off as construction workers were gathered in a market selling generators and other appliances.
A police spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Dhurgam Muhammad Hassan, said the first bomb went off in a freezer. Then, as rescuers and onlookers gathered round, a car bomb exploded.
According to the region's top medical official, Diaa al-Aboudi, 34 people died in the explosion. Hassan put the number of the wounded from the blasts at 60.
The Kut explosions were the first major act of violence since Iraq's political leaders earlier this month announced that they would begin negotiations with the US over whether to keep a small number of American forces in the country past 31 December.
All US forces are to leave the country by the end of this year but both Iraqi and US officials have........

Iran and Syria have long been allies, yet as if Khameni realises Assad's situation is not salvageable, he will abandon him
For President Bashar al-Assad, the situation in Syria is becoming worse every day. In the middle of the biggest crisis his regime has faced, he has had one friend on whom he could rely: Iran's supreme leader, Ali Khamenei.
Khamenei has been Assad's steadfast friend, providing him with political as well as material support. But as Assad's position worsens, he will need to rely on Khamenei's regime more, especially since an increasing number of Assad's neighbours are turning against him.
First was Turkey, which used to be a close ally. Now, the Turkish government is putting pressure on Assad and warning him to stop killing demonstrators and to implement reforms as soon as possible. And then the Saudis joined in by telling Assad to stop "his killing machine" and withdrawing their ambassador. A number of other Gulf states followed suit.
Assad has good reason....

Even by the standards of regimes in the region, Bashar Assad's is brutal. But we feel the end may be near
One of two eye doctors are determining the future of Syria. The first is alive and kicking: son of a brutal military dictator; heir to a corrupt family junta that has ruled the country for 41 years. The second is a long-dead private citizen, buried at the bottom of his family's modest garden.
Dr Hikmat Khani was head of Hama's national hospital when, in 1982, his city was besieged and bombarded on the orders of Bashar Assad's father Hafiz and his uncle Rif'at. To rout 1,500 armed Islamists there, the Assads killed 25,000 innocent civilians. Tens of thousands were rounded up and tortured. Young girls were gang-raped and women had their hands chopped off so their bracelets could be stolen more quickly after their men had been murdered.
The maimed lay on the streets of the half-flattened city, crying out in agony, as many eyewitnesses have recounted since. Dr Khani sought to....

Thirty-three years after defeat, Diana Nyad is back to swim from Cuba to Florida. Her example helps us face our disappointments
I thought I'd never fall for a hope-peddler again, but I am rooting for Diana Nyad.
The world record-holding distance swimmer dove into the waters off Cuba at dusk on Sunday night. Her destination: Florida. One hundred and three miles, at least 60 hours and a shark-infested ocean away. Nyad turns 62 in a few weeks.
"It's not about sports; it's about hope," she's said. It's also about conquering her own demons. In 1978, at age 28, she tried the Havana to Key West swim for the first time, and her doctors pulled her out of the water after 42 hours and about 76 miles. High winds were buffeting her off course.
This time, the water's calm, the weather's temperate. Eighteen hours on, CNN's Matt Sloane reported that Nyad was fine, except for a bit of "shoulder pain and a touch of asthma". Dang!
It's what Nyad calls her "extreme dream", and, as I said, I'm..
