When a brutal injury cut short his international rugby career, Richard Parks thought his world had collapsed. Then he discovered a way back, the longest imaginable. He tells Euan Ferguson about his incredible journey to the ends of the earth
It's more than possible that Richard Parks is the nicest man I have ever met, or you will ever meet, and I do hope you get the chance. I use the word "nice" in its utterly best modern sense. In the vernacular of modern fame, you might expect a tall, tanned, good-looking former Welsh rugby international who is, when I first meet him in Cardiff, 12 frantic days away from setting the rather astonishing record of visiting both of Earth's poles and climbing the highest mountains on all seven continents within seven months, to carry a certain arrogance, hauteur; even some simple sway. Instead, he apologises for putting his bacon roll too close to my coffee, then tries to shrink into his seat and hide, nicely.
This is the slowest-burn story of.......

Collection of innovative short stories reveals that the Russian writer was still experimenting in his final years
A collection of nine short stories by Alexander Solzhenitsyn, described by scholars as ranking alongside his best work, is to be published in English for the first time. In one of the publishing events of the autumn, the collection will appear under the title Apricot Jam and Other Stories, fulfilling a long-held desire of the author that the work be available to the English-speaking world.
The collection reveals that Solzhenitsyn was still experimenting with literary form towards the end of his life. Eight of the stories have two parts, which are conceived as pairs. Daniel J. Mahoney, a Solzhenitsyn scholar, said: "This was a new form that Solzhenitsyn, always a pioneer of new genres… called binary tales. They're two-part stories that are connected by a theme, even though there's a sharp contrast. They [each] range from 20 to 50 typed pages. Many of them highlight.....

Russian investigators believe Magomed Yevloyev, 20, carried out the suicide bomb attack at Domodedovo airport that killed 36
Russian authorities have named a suspected suicide bomber of Moscow's airport and arrested his teenage brother and sister, an official said on Wednesday.
The 24 January bombing of Domodedovo airport was conducted by 20-year old Magomed Yevloyev, said an official working with Russia's top investigative agency in Ingushetia. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to publicly discuss the issue.
Officials have previously said that the bomber was a 20-year old man from the Caucasus, but did not give his name.
Chechen rebel warlord Doku Umarov has claimed responsibility for the attack, which killed 36 and injured more than 180.
A court in Ingushetia's provincial capital, Magas, also ordered the arrest of Yevloyev's 15-year old brother and 16-year old sister, suspected of involvement in the attack, the official said on Wednesday. They..

Interim leader stays ahead despite last-minute surge in support for late Polish president's twin brother, exit polls show
Poland's interim leader, Bronislaw Komorowski, appears to have held off a last-minute surge of voter support for the twin brother of the late president, whose death in a plane crash forced yesterday's early election.
Exit polls showed Komorowski with a slight edge over Jaroslaw Kaczynski, who essentially conceded defeat in the presidential run-off by declaring before supporters: "I congratulate the winner".
A poll released yesterday by the TNS OBOP institute predicted Komorowski winning 53.1% of the vote, and Kaczynski winning 46.9%. A separate poll, by Millward Brown SMG/KRC, showed Komorowski with nearly 52% and Kaczynski with just over 48%.
Official results based on 95% of polling stations reporting appeared to bear out the exit polls. They showed that Komorowski won 52.63% of the vote and Kaczynski 47.37%, the state electoral commission said early this...

Contest fought in shadow of air accident at Smolensk in April in which Kaczynski's twin brother died
Poland's recent national tragedy produced an election yesterday in which the former prime minister, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, failed to make a comeback by succeeding his late twin brother as president, two months after the latter was killed in an air crash along with many others of the Polish elite.
According to various exit polls for TV stations, the frontrunner, Bronislaw Komorowski of the governing Civic Platform party, won a lead of between 5 and 12 points over Kaczynski, although the contest goes to a second round on 4 July, as Komorowski did not get the 50% needed to win outright.
Eight others who stood yesterday will drop out, and Komorowski is expected to benefit from the left's vote which was better than expected, on a predicted 15%.
The election came four months early, fought in the shadow of the air accident at Smolensk on 10 April, when a plane crashed in heavy fog while...

• Yulia Tymoshenko's Orange coalition dissolves
• Viktor Yanukovych likely to form new coalition
The Ukrainian prime minister, Yulia Tymoshenko, was ousted in a parliamentary vote of no confidence today, sounding the death knell for the Orange coalition that emerged from the 2004 revolution.
Tymoshenko, defeated in recent presidential elections by her Orange nemesis Viktor Yanukovych, was removed when deputies mustered 243 votes in favour of a no-confidence resolution in the 450-seat chamber.
Yanukovych's Regions party will seek to form its own coalition within 30 days and a government within 60, or face a snap parliamentary election. The president's party is the biggest bloc in the chamber with 171 seats but is well short of the required 226 majority.
Mykola Azarov, a former finance minister and a likely candidate for the prime minister's post, said: "The talks are not simple but I think they will be finalised in the coming days."
Even if Yanukovych succeeds in stitching together a coalition, the fractious nature of Ukraine's parliament and the limited powers of the presidency mean the country, which is split between a Russia-leaning east and south and a western-friendly west and centre, could face further political instability at a time when the economy, which contracted by 15% last year, requires urgent attention.
Despite losing the 7 February presidential election, Tymoshenko had resisted pressure to quit. But her majority has evaporated as smaller coalition allies switched their allegiance in recent weeks.
